Building a strong, collaborative relationship takes time. From the outset I believe in the power of authenticity and clear expectations. What do both entities want to achieve? How will we communicate? What does success look like for both parties? Adopting an agile methodology also helps. Test, review, consider, progress. It enables close monitoring of the relationship and the output, without creating an accusatory / defensive conversation. Showing that the output metrics for both partners are equally weighted, having integrity and being authentic will continue to build and add trust. Finally, getting to know everyone involved on a friendly and personal basis can often prevent divides from forming.

Entering a partnership is like setting sail on a journey. Before you embark, you need a clear map. First, define your goals and how you'll know when you've reached them. Next, study your potential partners - what they're good at and where they might struggle. Use tools like SWOT analysis to do this. Once you know your partners inside out, work on the plan. Though partnerships are the long game of business development and revenue generation this doesn't mean that there can't be quick wins. Build into each collaboration notable wins that can be accomplished and celebrated early on in the relationship. Some organizations are not built upon this level of care/detail - beware. Challenging Directly: Is your partner not holding up their end of the bargin? It is on you to challenge them in the spirit of caring personally and deeply about them and the partnership. Nothing is worse than withholding how you really feel and the partnership flailing.

For me, that communication has to be two-way, frequent and genuine - a conversation! Just broadcasting at a partner is not the same as engaging them in a meaningful dialogue on an ongoing basis. Only through such a dialogue can you understand what their goals are, how they are doing with respect to meeting them, and how you can help. If you are helping a partner meet their goals, you can be sure they will reciprocate. That mutual benefit, coupled with respect and communication is what forges true meaningful collaboration.
