In our opinion, the best thing to do is to obtain the opinions of employees before starting the project and offer reward options that meet their needs. And of course, the total budget that can be allocated and the reward budget amount per person when this budget is compared to the total number of employees throughout the company are also important. This can't be over emphasised enough. Ideally criteria for recognition can be aligned back to a Company's Purpose or Values. This way it is recognising those efforts that are aligned with the way the business is positioning itself. Once launched, it's a fine balance between adequately communicating the reward and recognition benefits available, and being seen to be creating too much spam. I would add 'on boarding' as another appropriate communication channel. There is also a need to communicate to those parting a Company to ensure that rewards accrued are redeemed, rather than potentially being forfeited.

The only way to know how to make something better is to first find out if it's good. This will come from those you serve, the recipients. And yes, you can and should always look at other KPIs built into adoption rates and usage.

Whilst on the spot recognitions go a long way, some individuals are strongly motivated by being seen by others as having delivered. Also helps to have the buy in of senior leaders both commenting on those being appreciated, but also recommending individuals themselves.
