How do you foster collaboration and innovation among your project engineering team members?

I am big on showing the team members how valued they are on the project and how important their input is toward acheiving the project objectives. This, I find, triggers a certain passion for the project and adhesion in the team. Offcourse, skill and performance can never be replaced, so when any of this is lacking I first seek to carry out one on one's to discuss the issues surrounding either of them with the individual. If a training is required, make sure they get it. I make sure they know I am in their corner. Lastly, communicate expectations clearly.

In my experience, understanding the strength and weaknesses of the team and of individuals is vital. Once this is done, I will let the team know that we should not compete but collaborate. We all fit into each other's strengths and weaknesses in a way. As collaboration continues, the identified weaknesses are managed via structured skill enhancement sessions where team members get to learn new things. On innovation, the right environment must be created by the project manager where team members are encouraged to think outside the box and allowed to contribute freely in the course of project meetings and activities. This can be enhanced by making team members part of the goal-setting and reward processes.

Culture I've found to be the single biggest factor to unlock a team's potential. A team's ability to execute is in proportion to the quality of the leadership and the development of culture that leadership can bring. It can be a blindspot in organizations as it is in part abstract and unquantifiable. However it largely affects the ability of a team to collaborate and adapt to new challenges.

I do this by ensuring clear and concise communication among the team members. At the commencement of the project ( at the kick-off meeting), the project objectives, end-to-end execution plans, set productivity targets, milestones dates, customer expectations, acceptance criteria, critical success factors, the end products and most especially the performance incentives are all communicated. During execution, all lines of communication are open for the exchange of project information, project data etc. Nothing is hidden from anyone, and all issues are given necessary attention. I promote team spirit by constantly organizing team building session and often times take design reviews, RA, hazid/hazop session outside office locations.
