How do you follow up with the host and the attendees after a guest lecture?

One thing I've found helpful is to highlight the big takeaways from students in my thank-you note to the guest lecturer. Sharing how their insights and expertise resonated with the class adds a personal touch and shows the tangible impact of their contribution. My guest speakers from companies like Amazon, TikTok, Google and Meta take precious time out of their busy schedules to speak in my classes, and those contributions shouldn't go unnoticed!

Indeed this is the most basic and profound of all post-talk engagements. I always send a thank you note to the inviting person or body with a brief pdf of my talk and of course a 'Groupfie'- this is an age of instant visualization and such pictorial notes work super!

After a guest lecture, I follow up with the host by expressing gratitude, soliciting feedback, and offering assistance for future events. I engage attendees by sharing a summary of key points, providing additional resources, and inviting further discussion or questions via email or online platforms. Maintaining communication fosters relationships and encourages continued engagement with the content and the lecturer.

I take a week to prepare and customize slides. I like to distribute the slides to organizer. I also thank the host by following up with an email and sometime share slides in a PDF after the guest lecture that can distributed to the students if I would like to focus on the specific topic and I share datasets with a short activity so they can practice in their own time if we cannot cover everything within a hour. Some guest lecturers on zoom will be highly interactive, answering questions so slides with an activity are included after the presentation to students and supporting links to articles and data sources.

Depending on the topic, I will try to create an additional clinical resource/information flyer to compliment the lecture, this is to help attendees to practically apply the information I've presented. To do this, I will have a slide at the end of the presentation that outlines the resource, when, why & how to use it, then have my email or url where they can go to download it. If people reach out/download the resource, then it shows they were engaged in the content. It will often pave the way for more meaningful conversations and fostering relationships. eg: I often present on exercise rehabilitation, so I have a number of resources that outline exercise prescription tips or example rehab programs for clinicians to use.

I believe it's crucial to share the slides with students. A common question is whether students should receive the slides before or after the lecture. Most students prefer to have them beforehand, as it allows them to make notes directly on the slides. However, from a lecturer’s view, it might be more beneficial to provide the slides later. For instance, if the lecture involves a interaction and certain discussion topics are explained on subsequent slides, revealing them too early could preempt the discussion. Balancing the benefits of student preparation with the effectiveness of in-class engagement is essential in deciding when to share educational materials.

In addition to my visual-aid/ slides etc I would also share some relevant link(s) for their self-assessment or whatever. Some general resources can be ever-green and all recipient's lobe them, such as VIA.org character strength test. This act ensures that you are always giving them a little extra- and, who doesn't like them!!

Seeking a formal feedback through online platforms is a great way to showcase that you genuinely care about their perspectives and are intended to get better. Sometimes, informal feedbacks by way of a short call with the organizer work well. If you are in a position to seek a testimonial then go for it. You are creating asset pool.

Thinking about how you want to connect afterwards should feed into your preparation, so include the relevant links, hashtags or handles in your presentation. One way to pull all of these together is by using a digital business card such as Linktree (https://linktr.ee/). Linktree will also allow you to curate a link to your slide deck or other resources you wish to share.

If you record your lecture, either as video or using a tool such as Otter (https://otter.ai/), you will already have a transcript of your talk from which to work. Having what can become a first draft is especially useful if you prefer to speak without writing a detailed script and also provides you with a record for future reference.

First is to ensure you network with host and participants. Take photos and collect their contact details and social media handles. Then post photos from your speaking event on social media and tag the host and guests.Give them applause for a well hosted event. Ensure you respond to comments and feedback. Tag or share the post with the host and guests. You could do two or more posts about the event, highlighting different occurrences. You could also reach out to them and communicate possible follow on activities to the speaking engagement .

A deliberate and purposeful follow through mechanism after guest lectures go a long way in building a deeper and fruitful relationship with the university/ institution/ organization body. If they have specific digital platforms to showcase their events, then you may express your desire to contribute via a blog, short posts etc. This builds continuity and association with other members too.
