In my own opinion identifying the ideal data viz community hinges on two key factors. Firstly, a suitable community should foster inclusivity and be welcoming to beginners, creating an environment where progress, no matter how small, is valued and shared. Secondly, a valuable community provides real-life examples and testimonials that offer practical guidance. As the saying goes, it's not the meetings themselves but the decisions made within them that define greatness. In a similar vein, while a community meeting these criteria is crucial, the true efficacy lies in your active participation. Merely having access to a network of professionals won't suffice; engaging in conversations and leveraging available resources is key.

In my experience the best way to learn data vis techniques is from try and error and seeing best practices. My advice would be to focus on one data vis tool at a time and master it. The Tableau community is a great resource of best practices.

These are all great options for finding communities. I would also focus on professional associations. Usually these associations have heaps of like minded members willing to mentor. It might cost you an annual membership fee but it will help you learn skills and build a professional network.

I think a community with a higher number of participants is a good indicator of the quality. Once you’re in the community and contributing, ask some of the participants with similar interests for recommendations. I’d focus on being involved in a small number of communities that suit your needs rather than being less involved in more communities.

I feel this is true for every part of your life however with the fast pace of change in data vis this is specially true. I always believe growth comes from 3 places and they should be split in these ratios: 1. On the job or practical experience should be 70% 2. Formal learning or qualifications. 20%. 3. Coaching and Mentoring. 10%.
