After you have a good idea of what your team members are interested in, make it a point to serve them a diverse platter of learning and growth opportunities to match. Make it personal. Make it meaningful. Make it fun! But also make it easy for everyone to access the resources they need to attend the events or seize the goods you draw up for them. After all, your investment in them is an investment for you, so make sure you equally invest in a system to ensure follow-through.

People will find their level of incompetence. As a start up organization, I felt it important that everyone in the company kept moving forward on a mutually beneficial career/education designed, but not limited to include personal aspirations . Only then can this education be truly fruitful and continual. Sustainable education is priceless for the company and the individual employee. Other employers are always ready to pay the extra money for the education received here. The question to ask is, “Does the new employer have the same kind of record as we do in continual employee education and new opportunities that will require even more education? If the answer was yes, trouble!! The answer was seldom yes.

Finding truly exceptional people is a skill.For the most part, there is very little luck in building a team of people smarter than you are. I rarely did only one final interview before hiring someone. I made sure they had to show emotion; as well as to listen to the prepared answers, being fed back as questions. All designed to make the applicant think outside their normal interview drivel. A”best” hire was someone that I learned was smarter than me.
