Brainstorming is a popular and effective technique for generating many ideas in a short time. However, not all brainstorming sessions are equally productive and creative. As a team facilitator, you need to plan, prepare, and guide the process to ensure that everyone contributes, feels valued, and respects the rules. Here are some tips on how to facilitate a brainstorming session that generates creative and diverse ideas.

1 Define the problem

Before you start brainstorming, you need to have a clear and specific problem statement that defines the scope and purpose of the session. The problem statement should be concise, relevant, and open-ended, allowing for different perspectives and solutions. You can use a question, a challenge, or a goal as the problem statement, and share it with the participants in advance. For example, "How can we improve customer satisfaction with our service?" or "What are some ways to reduce our environmental impact?"

Before offering a problem statement, recognize that systems are perfectly calibrated to produce the results to date. The question we may want to ask first is "How do we know we have an issue or opportunity?" followed by "What if that concern didn't exist, what results would be different?"

2 Set the ground rules

To create a safe and supportive environment for brainstorming, you need to establish some ground rules that everyone agrees to follow. The ground rules should encourage participation, creativity, and respect, and discourage criticism, judgment, and negativity. Some common ground rules are: no idea is too wild or silly, quantity over quality, build on each other's ideas, listen actively, and avoid interruptions. You can also set a time limit, a target number of ideas, and a method for recording and organizing the ideas.

3 Use a facilitation technique

Depending on the size, composition, and dynamics of your team, you may need to use different facilitation techniques to stimulate and manage the brainstorming process. Some popular techniques are: round-robin, where each participant shares one idea in turn or brainwriting, where each participant writes down their ideas on paper or sticky notes and passes them to others for feedback or addition. Another is nominal group technique, where each participant ranks their ideas and the group discusses and votes on the best ones and mind mapping, where the group creates a visual diagram of the ideas and their connections.

I provide each session participant with a large sticky note and matker to write down a work or phrase to respond to a question I pose to the whole group then have each individual post there submissions on a blank wall. This enables teams to share their individual ideas and identify common themes.

4 Encourage diversity and creativity

One of the goals of brainstorming is to generate a wide range of ideas that reflect the diversity and creativity of your team. To achieve this, you need to encourage your participants to think outside the box, challenge assumptions, and explore different angles. You can use various prompts, questions, and tools to spark their imagination, such as: what if, how might we, SCAMPER (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate, reverse), random word association, or brainstorming games.

5 Synthesize and evaluate the ideas

After generating a large number of ideas, you need to synthesize and evaluate them to identify the most promising and feasible ones. Use different criteria and methods to filter and prioritize the ideas, such as: relevance, originality, impact, cost, time, or resources. Techniques such as dot voting, affinity diagramming, or SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) can help group and rank the ideas. The final step is to select the best ideas and plan how to implement them.

6 Follow up and celebrate

The brainstorming session is not over until you follow up with your participants and celebrate their efforts and achievements. Be sure to thank them for their contributions, share the results and outcomes of the session, and solicit their feedback and suggestions for improvement. Acknowledge and reward their creativity and collaboration, and celebrate the success of the implemented ideas. By doing so, you will build trust, rapport, and motivation among your team members, and foster a culture of innovation and learning.
