It’s important that they know when a goal may not be feasible. Being ready to provide alternate majors and pathways can be so impactful. Often there are lesser known majors that might be a great fit but students have never been introduced to them. Further, utilizing our social capital to assist a young person operationalize their career is so important. It's like the staging of a home that we wish to sell and in that way they will know how to utilize their skills to be most successful in their area of interest.

I have a "door ajar" policy here that has proven useful. After telling students what they need to know and connecting them to the proper resources, I make sure to let them know that I will continue to be here to support them. However, when students have trouble making the transition, I'm quick to redirect them to those more valuable resources. Sometimes this means telling students that they should reach out to someone else, even though they're more comfortable speaking to me. Rather than force them to seek help elsewhere, I prefer to frame the transition as one of relative skills and utility. In addition to assessing the advisees' needs and goals, I would add: assessing what the risks are. I received many inquiries about transferring from one major to another. This poses risks since the following can occur: applying to the major, getting rejected, failing to meet their degree requirements in their current major for too long, and getting asked to leave the university. I made sure that the advisee knew what was at stake.
