How do you explain your marketing strategy to your team?

In my experience each person’s role and involvement is important. You need collaboration within the team to be able to present a successful strategic marketing plan. Setting goals for each department and what the company expectations are is important. Make sure to get accurate and up to-date data for your audience. To be able to tailor the companies message it does need to be tailored to the specific audience needs and interest.

Effectively communicating a marketing strategy to your team requires clarity and engagement. Begin by presenting the overarching goal and target audience, emphasizing a deep understanding of customer personas. Discuss the competitive landscape and your unique value proposition. Outline the marketing channels and tactics you'll utilize, detailing content strategies, and content types. Provide a timeline with milestones and budget allocation insights. Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and assign roles and responsibilities clearly. Address potential challenges and establish open communication channels for feedback. This holistic approach ensures alignment, enthusiasm, and a shared vision within the team.

Understanding your audience is crucial for effective communication of your marketing strategy. As a strategist with a focus on growth, I recognize that each team member's unique role influences how they perceive and utilize strategic information. In an industry that is hectic, confusing, and ever-changing, your strategy needs to be the opposite. It needs to be something your entire team knows, can communicate to others and relate to themselves. While the strategy itself is complex, the explanation and implementation needs to be easy to understand. Your strategy needs to be your team’s North Star, which is impossible if your team doesn’t know where or how to find it.

Create a key message that will be the essence of everything you create. You’ll rarely communicate this key message literally. It is what you want your audience to say when they summarize everything they’ve seen from you. Oh, and you want to write this down in simple, clear language. Your grandma needs to get it.

We have detailed SOPs (standard operating procedures) to deliver value to our clients at the least cost possible. This keeps everyone on the same page and delivering for our clients. Clear procedures and expectations are the key.

Your team needs to know how their marketing efforts contribute to the overall success of the organization. There has to be a direct link between the business objective and marketing objective. The strategy is just the road you and your team have decided is best to reach that objective. It really can be and must be that simple.

Asking for feedback, suggestions and concerns is essential. Not only will it help strengthen your strategy and bring clarity but also allow the team members feel heard, involved, and invested into the task.

MAKE IT RELATABLE & STICKY! With business demands, managers on occasion forget that the success of the well thought out strategy sits with other stakeholders. How will they implement what they can't remember? Bring it home, by making it sticky, this could mean 1) Rephras it into fewer words 2) Drop the jargon 3) Connect it to a trend 4) Have the team interpret it into a version they understand I have had the benefit of simplifying a four year strategy into two words and it caught online a bush fire. The outcome was one for the books - highly recommended
