1 Define your objectives

Before you can measure your incident response team's performance, you need to define what you want them to achieve. Your objectives should be aligned with your organizational goals, risk appetite, and compliance requirements. For example, you may want to reduce the impact of incidents on your business operations, customers, and reputation. You may also want to improve your detection and response capabilities, learn from incidents, and prevent recurrence. Your objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

Once you have your objectives, it is important to establish metrics to track and evaluate them. Metrics are quantifiable indicators that measure the activities, outputs, and outcomes of your incident response team. This can help you assess their efficiency, effectiveness, and maturity. Examples of metrics include time to detect, contain, and resolve incidents; number and severity of incidents; root cause analysis and remediation actions; customer satisfaction and feedback; incident response team skills and training; and incident response plan and procedures.

In an organization, reporting is done to help measure performance. It is therefore important to provide and report metrics that provide value to stakeholders. A poorly designed metric can mislead or misdirect stakeholders, resulting in frustration in the long run. A problem-solving concept known as the “Five Whys” can be used to design useful metrics. This is done by digging deeper into the question or objective to identify the root purpose or need. This does not necessarily mean that you have to ask “why”; other terms such as “what”, and “how” can be used as well. By digging deeper, we would be able to find out what the stakeholders actually want to know, and we can then use it to design metrics that provide higher value.

In order to measure your metrics, you need to collect and analyze data from various sources such as incident logs, security tools, surveys, audits, benchmarks, and best practices. It is essential to collect and analyze data regularly and consistently in order to monitor your incident response team's performance over time and compare it with your objectives and expectations. Additionally, data visualization tools and dashboards are helpful for presenting your findings and insights in a clear and concise manner.

Based on your metrics, data, and analysis, you should identify the strengths and weaknesses of your incident response team and take actions to address them.
