How do you evaluate the performance of a sports manager?

Setting clearly defined goals and expectations is a must when it comes to evaluating the success of your team. I also believe in weekly meetings with my executive team and monthly meetings with my entire staff. As the leader of an organization, your team has to know that you’re “ALL IN” for them both professionally and personally. My motto is to lead with INTEGRITY and LOVE. By doing these two things, your staff will be more apt to go the extra mile.

When referring to sports events, objectives of the manager should be: - participation: how many people attended the event? And virtually? - experience: how was the spectator experience? Positively evaluated? - economics: turnover? Gross profit? - financially: did the event produce a positive cash flow? Since the beginning of the project? - socially: was the event able to generate a positive social impact? Any initiatives planned? - environmentally: was the event able to reduce its environmental impact? Did you compensate this impact? To reach these objectives the sports manager needs a committed, with complimentary competences, motivated TEAM of people. To implement a successful STRATEGY you need a proper STRUCTURE.

A critical KPI should be Sport Development, Participation and Performance. This is supported by all areas listed in the opinion piece. Monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting at least 2-4 times per annum at various levels of the organisation are important steps to inform short, medium and long-term goals. Organisational culture remains an critical aspect for the team because it informs, upholds and strengthens or challenges the vision, mission and objectives of an organisation.

In my experience, as it relates to effective leadership, a vitally important part is being an authentic and transparent communicator! Ultimately, it’s the job of the sport leader/manager to find the ‘tie that binds’ your stakeholders. For example, whether your assisting student athletes with eligibility concerns, dealing with a challenging personality of a parent or even a coach, the ability to discover common ground in an authentic and transparent fashion is of utmost importance and will aid in creating and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with all stakeholders of the sport organization.

The best any sports manager can give the stakeholders is the result. When you produce positive result at all levels of your engagement, you have won the hearts of all stakeholders. You must be result driven and involve all team members for you to have this. Producing positive result at critical period is the key of satisfying major stakeholders in the organization or team.

Analysis of the plan is very essential and should reflect the vision and mission of the organization. Promotion of the entity, their products, services, team, players, etcetera needs adequate information and understanding of the best practices, market positioning and resources.

Sports Manager - Lead by not leading. Hire good people. Create an environment where they feel safe to express themselves honestly and completely. Then get out of their way. Biggest failing I see in Sports Managers is "over-managing". Free people to be all they choose to be. Make people feel like they belong - and they can give their best without fearing failure. Listen to your team members - and learn what excites them - what inspires them and what they're good at - then support them and let them get on with it. Numbers are important. Deadlines are important. Performance is important. But numbers and deadlines and performance are all dependent on human factors. Don't be blinded by targets, goals and numbers - we're in the people business.

This is the number one area a Sports Manager has to be effective. Leading people is hard and takes an inordinate amount of time and effort. Getting this area right enables every other facet of the role to work effectively. Spend time with your people, find out what type of person they are and invest in them. Not all will click with you but those that feel your invested respect you and work for you and the organisation.

The mindset of sports managers (why not all managers?) should always be on People. Strategy is crucial, processes are instrumental but People is Fundamental. The basis of any successful project lies in the people/workforce management. We can't expect that the engine (organization) works on full throttle if we don't feed it and maintain it in an optimal performance. Keep the motivation and the reward patterns running in the same tracks adding the organization main goals to this equation. Maybe we will have some really good surprises.

I think adaptability is one of the most important skills of the next decade. Everything changes so fast today that it's hard to plan everything 100%. The ability of the coach to adapt to changing circumstances, such as injuries, changes in the roster, or shifts in the competitive landscape is key. Assess whether the coach can adjust strategies accordingly. A good example in football are coaches Guardiola and Inzaghi who have successfully changed the roles of some players in recent years.

Evaluation of the sports manager needs to have a mindset that is geared to having the willingness to adapt to the changing landscape. New technologies bring new challenges alongside of new and enhanced ways of performing tasks. The sports manager must be willing to accept these changes and seek to use these innovations to their advantage.

You can not learn how to be a Sports Manager. You either can do it or not do it. You can get better, but if you don't have it you will never have it.
