From a legal perspective, the key point is to understand how risk is shared in your contract. Understand the scope of work set for your designer and stay within the parameters set. Recognise that variations to the design will affect time and cost of the project. Having a solid contract in place is obviously crucial (says the lawyer) but it also important to manage that contract. Stay on top of the brief and ensure things are progressing properly. Highlight any issues as soon as they arise - don't wait until Project completion.

Design is on the one hand a very subjective field of work which often ends in senseless and superficial discussions about look and feel. More important is that the initial idea is embedded in a thoughtful research and design process with a meaning about the product or the customers needs. Thus I would always look behind the scenes before judging the obvious.

The overarching theme in this process is to approach design with a multidisciplinary mindset. If I have to give one piece of advice it would be stay away from linear step-by-step processes and follow an iterative design approach while trying to shorten your design loops through timely feedback from relevant sources.

Have a strong design management team that reviews the design before proceeding to the next phase by answering the following basic 3 questions: 1- is the design in line and responsive to the design brief? 2- is the design being completed with the required details to minimize potential future RFIs and claims? 3- is the design in line with the cost plan? Do not give the go ahead to the next phase unless the answer is positive to the three questions!

The basics are always essential: Establishing a clear line of decision making during the kick-off meeting, over communicating, ensuring you are given the A team from any consulting firm, a clear schedule with definitive milestones, and setting clear expectations will all help set the stage for a success project. One item I see most often not addressed from day one is budget. The entire design team needs to working in unison to create a project that falls within the budget the pro-forma is built to. If the team doesn’t understand budget constraints, it’s difficult to assign and hold the team to task over a design directive that meets stakeholders expectations.

Identifying, assessing and managing risks throughout the design and development process is crucial. This includes financial and construction risks but also environmental, regulatory and reputational risks. A proactive approach to risk management can prevent costly and time-consuming setbacks.

We must clearly define the stakeholders needs first and foremost. What are their goals? What is the intended outcome? Now take all inputs which will influence the outcome, obstacles, possibilities, new technologies and the regulatory path to construction…test them against the economic conditions which are required to achieve the stakeholders needs. Refine the idea. Repeat the process from the beginning with this refinement. Repeat again. Do not bring in consultants who want the easiest path to something, those who compromise before they even start the job….hire consultants who will draw you the roadmap to exceed your desired outcome!
