How do you enforce safety policies with your team?

Explain the purpose of the safety process, the hazards of ignoring safety procedures and unsafe conditions. Encourage everyone to see himself or herself as actor in reducing or eliminating hazards. Encouragement via recognition of best safety observer, celebration of a safety milestone such as a million safe manhour.

Since safety policy leans towards prescriptive and "without compromise", it becomes less about making field level decisions and more about clearly defined actions under specific conditions. Training workers in the boundaries and logic for the policy using methods that connect with workers is key. Whether a policy states "everyone must wear hard hats" or "always wear hard hats under the following conditions", in my experience workers respond and comply best when its personal and built into habit. A landscaper working in the middle if an open field will question blanket policies to wear a hard hat, for example. Often, someone is not performing in HSE because they are missing something - communication; proper tools; fit-for-purpose PPE. If you control the purse strings, pro-actively seek out what the roadblocks are to your team's safety challenges, and solve them. If you don't, help be a voice in improving conditions, equipment and time allowed for HSE activities.

As a leader you possess the leadership qualities to lead. By you adhering to and enforcing safety policies, your team will follow in the culture that you are creating within. They will in turn understand best practices and will have a greater understanding of safety policies and standards.

Someone told me early on in my HSE journey - your minimum is your subordinates' maximum on safety behavior. I believe first and foremost in leading by example when it comes to safety behaviors.

Safety begins with you keep it in your mind remember you can protect your family and friends once you understand what it means to be safe and value of Good Heath

Foundation will be "Leadership commitment" followed by; 1- Policies & procedures to clearly spell out the rules & expectations. 2- Awareness of masses, especially the contractor workers. 3- Facilitation & provision of necessary resources like training, tools, and PPEs etc. 4- Creating a psychologically safe work space for workers to openly share their mistakes to help others learn and improve. 5- Audits to closely monitor the compliance. 6- Reward & Recognition for positive contributions and Reprimand for intentional violations.

I think what's missing is the inter-departmental collaboration opportunity. In other words, how can you partner with the team who oversees well-being and integrate messaging on the criticality for all in regard to safety; or ensure all departments are beginning meetings with safety updates.

As a safety professional getting our front line managers on board and in line with safety is key to improve the safety culture of our company overall. Without their buy in folks who report up into them will not be open to safety improvements or reporting safety issues. We use GEMBAs a lot, which is go to where the work is. Safety GEMBAs whether they are monthly, weekly or daily shows the employee that Sr. Leadership cares. Not just about safety but about many other things important to continuous improvement.

Though some people might not instantly see the opportunity and partnership, it's important to show the connections and the win-win. When training on situational awareness, let's talk about mental health or ill health. When our mind is not well, we typically are not fully present in aware. And it does not need to be a big project. Sometimes the little points are very impactful. How do you center yourself through breathing exercises, how does preventive stretching help with repetitive tasks? Instead of creating something new, it's all about integrating.
