In the heady days not long before the dot com bust, I formed a co-business partnership. We were both sole traders at the time looking for expansion in our areas of expertise. Hungry and ambitious we sought to exploit our obvious synergies by combining forces and sharing customers. It worked well for many years growing stronger all the time until something broke. Why did it brake? Well, you realise you are only human when you get pulled in other directions and eventually, let go of the original vision because you're a different person now. The magic has gone. Time to explore the best way to back out. Sadly, people will get let down. People that still believe in the vision.

Looking for ways to end a business partnership that had stopped working became a real challenge because of the drag on personal energy and the effect that had on decision making. I decided to make it a defined project and give full commitment to it in the same way I would to a customer project. I called a meeting for my business partner and all our employees calling it a 'brave new world'. Our two business streams would be seperated. We would attempt to leave with what we brought. It took time. 2 years.

3 Follow through with action

After you have communicated your decision, you need to follow through with action. This means completing any outstanding tasks or projects, delivering any final payments or reports, transferring any assets or data, and terminating any contracts or agreements. I believe most successful businesses will tell you that fantastic customer service is at the heart of their success. Keeping customer service as the highest priority whilst breaking up a partnership is tough but actually, if you are good at it, that's why you show up every day anyway. For my part, I had decided to go in a new direction so I passed on my goodwill to a new careful owner ensuring my clients were well looked after.

4 Maintain a positive relationship

Even though you are ending a partnership, you don't have to burn any bridges or damage your reputation. You can still maintain a positive relationship with your partner, by expressing your gratitude and appreciation for their collaboration, acknowledging their contributions and achievements, and offering your support and assistance if needed. You never know when you might cross paths again, or when you might need a referral or a recommendation from them.
