1 Ask open-ended questions

One of the most effective ways to empower your coachees to find their own solutions is to ask open-ended questions that stimulate their thinking, creativity, and self-awareness. Open-ended questions are those that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no, but require more elaboration and reflection. For example, you can ask your coachees: "What are your goals for this session?", "What are the options available to you?", "How do you feel about this situation?", or "What would success look like for you?". By asking open-ended questions, you are inviting your coachees to explore their own thoughts, feelings, and actions, and to generate their own ideas and solutions.

2 Use active listening skills

The people that I have led has (9 of 10- ish) proven that they have had the capability to rise from norm. Ask them and give them ground to go forward and they will. I have had at least 5 people under "my guard" that have risen to CEO.

Limit interruptions. ... Pay attention to what's being said, not what you want to say. ... Be okay with silence. ... Encourage the other person to offer ideas and solutions before you give yours. Active listening requires you to listen attentively to a speaker, understand what they’re saying, respond and reflect on what’s being said, and retain the information for later. This keeps both listener and speaker actively engaged in the conversation, and it’s an essential building block of compassionate leadership.

3 Challenge and stretch your coachees

A third way to empower your coachees to find their own solutions is to challenge and stretch them beyond their comfort zone and current level of performance. Challenging and stretching your coachees means: asking them to consider different perspectives and assumptions, inviting them to try new behaviors and approaches, setting high but realistic expectations and standards, and holding them accountable for their actions and results. By challenging and stretching your coachees, you are helping them to grow and learn from their experiences, and to overcome their barriers and limitations.

The change will not happen for any of us unless we are challenged – or questioned – to identify another perspective in relation to our thought processes, emotions, and/or habits: our human experiences. And based on new or conscious awareness of what is desired or required to achieve a goal, a client then decides on new ways of being and doing outside of their current comfort zone to support the achievement of their goal/s. People seek coaching because they want to create a shift in some aspect of their lives. As a coach, it’s our role to establish a trusting partnership where the client feels they are safe to be vulnerable and where the coach can support them to notice other powerful ways of seeing, hearing, and feeling their experiences.

4 Use powerful tools and models

A fourth way to empower your coachees to find their own solutions is to use powerful tools and models that can help them structure their thinking, analyze their situation, and plan their actions. Powerful tools and models are those that are simple, practical, and relevant for your coachees' goals and challenges. For example, you can use the GROW model (Goal, Reality, Options, Way forward) to guide your coachees through a coaching conversation, or the SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to help them assess their current state and future potential. 5 Foster a growth mindset

A fifth way to empower your coachees to find their own solutions is to foster a growth mindset in them. A growth mindset is a belief that abilities and skills can be developed and improved through effort, feedback, and learning. A growth mindset encourages your coachees to: embrace challenges and setbacks as opportunities to learn, seek and apply feedback and guidance, experiment and try new things, and celebrate their progress and achievements. By fostering a growth mindset, you are helping your coachees to develop a positive and proactive attitude towards finding their own solutions.

In my experience giving coachees the permission and freedom to 'fail fast', is an incredible environment for growth. Often, you see them make mistakes which you warn them about but they are able to learn much quicker due to the experience they have from their failure. Their thinking is more creative and they are motivated to reach their goals without pressures of being right all the time hovering over them.
