In my mind, I treat the video like a puzzle. I try to make sure I have all the pieces(elements) before I even start editing. I then setup my border or parameter's in my head. What is the desired duration, how will it start and end. This will box in my project and set the desired limitations so I can just focus on filling in the middle. I'll figure out the pacing as I go.

However, while sticking to the convention, it is also quite good to be creative in order to drive interest, engagement and freshness. Following a format strictly will make the video being edited become monotonous, predictable and less attractive.
'Following a format' could be interpreted in many ways. You need a clear brief from the client. Reference videos are one of the best and simplest starting points. A storyboard and script are great but at least have a basic flow of the sequence written down. Alternatively give the editor the key message you want + a reference video and let them do the thinking!
Once you have chosen your format, you need to organize your assets, such as footage, audio, graphics, and transitions. You should create folders and labels for each type of asset and use a consistent naming system. This will help you find and manage your files more easily and avoid confusion or duplication. You should also review your assets and delete or backup any unnecessary or unused ones to free up space and speed up your editing process.
Also keep in mind that you may need to come back to this project months or even years later. Always make sure to keep copies of your footage stored within the same folder as your project file so you never experience issues with missing footage. Alongside RAW footage backups, I tend to organize projects into folders like this: Project Name > Project files, Footage, Audio, Images/Graphics, Exports This way, you have everything you need to revisit a project contained within one master folder, even if that folder has been archived for years.
Organizing assets is key to efficient editing. Folders and labels keep everything in order, ensuring a seamless workflow. Regularly reviewing and decluttering will save time and boost creativity.
Do not skimp out on organizing your assets, especially your stock videos, sounds, and titles. Put them in different folders and label them with clear and descriptive names so that you need the least effort to locate a file. This is also helpful for those who have limited screen estate. The time you spend organizing is not wasted, the time you spend fumbling around looking for something somewhere is. Tips: Don't use names that are too long and don't nest those folders too deep or you will be in trouble looking for them.
Depending on how complex your edit/project is, you might need to create topic folders and have video/audio/photo sub-folders within each topic bin/folder.
The next step is to create a timeline for your video. A timeline is a visual representation of the sequence and duration of your clips, tracks, and effects. You should use a video editing software that suits your needs and preferences, such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve. You should start by importing your assets to the software and dragging them to the timeline. You should arrange them according to the format you want to follow and make sure they are aligned and synchronized.
Creating a well-structured timeline is the backbone of seamless storytelling. I'm a fan of Adobe Premiere Pro for its versatility. Importing assets and organizing them cohesively sets the stage for a compelling video. Alignment and synchronization are crucial for a smooth and professional result.
After creating a timeline, you should trim and edit your clips to refine your video. You should use the tools and features of your software to cut, crop, rotate, resize, and adjust your clips. You should also apply transitions, filters, and effects to enhance your video and create a smooth and consistent flow. You should pay attention to the pacing, rhythm, and mood of your video and match them to the format you want to follow.
Pro tip - Use keyboard shortcuts for cutting clips, arrow keys for navigation around clips etc. this will save lots of valuable time.
Tip: Find a used keyboard and buy shortcut stickers of your preferred editing program (or make your own) and use apps like AutoHotkey to map complicated shortcuts to a button press. You're welcome!
Adding to Nipun's point. Custom Keyboard Shortcuts are your friend. For example, my workflow includes custom shortcuts for auto-transitions for audio only, changed my cut on playhead to "e" on the keyboard, so that I use "q""w"and "e" in conjunction while moving clips around and cutting as needed.
The next step is to add audio and graphics to your video. Audio and graphics can make a big difference in the quality and impact of your video. You should use audio and graphics that are relevant, appropriate, and compatible with your format. For example, you might want to add music, sound effects, voice-overs, or ambient sounds to your video, depending on the genre and tone of your project. You might also want to add text, logos, icons, or animations to your video, depending on the message and style of your project.
Graphics should be the very last thing you deal with. Audio/music kinda needs to be present from the beginning once you are done organizing which clips you know you will need.
Music really puts the emotion into the video, so it's best to decide on it before getting too far into it. For upbeat videos, cutting along the beat makes a huge difference! For more contemplative videos, align the most inspiring parts with the climactic section of the music (there's always a peak, just ride with it). You can cut music just like a video and transition with constant gain.
audio is the thing that gets botched the most. making great recordings from the start. knowing how to mic your source. getting a great recording from the get go is essential. all the audio restoration tools in the world can't help a low quality recording. your video deserves great audio.
In addition to Adobe Premiere PRO, I find Adobe After Effects to be very helpful to add elements like graphic elements, text and animation.
Preplanning will save your project. When editing any specific part of your video, it's important to have a solid outline of what sounds, graphics, and voice-over you are looking for, as this will help you keep on track of the overall aesthetic and vibe of the piece.
The final step is to export and share your video. You should choose a file format and a resolution that suit your format and your platform. For example, you might want to export your video as MP4, MOV, or AVI, depending on the compatibility and quality of your video. You might also want to choose a resolution that matches the standard or preference of your platform, such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Instagram. You should also check your video for any errors or glitches before exporting and sharing it.
These days the export file types isn't a huge deal. When you upload to most of these platforms they will compress and reformat the file you provide automatically. But not everything is always compatible so its good to do some research on the file types they support or recommend.
Don't limit yourself to editing rules. Video editing is full of guidelines with a million exceptions. Have fun and go with the flow.
EVERYTHING COUNTS! I typically start with TARGET AUDIENCE & TYPE (documentary, marketing, etc.) That establishes TONE. And that speaks to the STORY you’re telling. Next, I reviews ASSETS. (Footage, audio, VO, logos, etc.) Once I’ve picked the assets I think I’ll use, I pick MUSIC. Nothing tells your audience “this is for you” like your music choice. I like music with stems. I can isolate certain instruments to further refine the story I’m telling. Next I create GRAPHICS (titles, lower 3rds, FONTS - critical!) Then, add CLIPS to the timeline. I tend 2 cut with the music. It’s natural for your brain to see cuts to a beat. From there, I make sure TRANSITIONS match the PACE. Then render &review. If done right, the only thing seen is the story.
