1 Choose the right format

When planning a brainstorming session, there are several formats to consider depending on the goal, time, and resources available. Brainwriting is one option, where each participant writes down their ideas on a piece of paper or sticky note, which is then passed to the next person for additional input. Alternatively, brainstorming with Post-Its involves writing ideas on sticky notes and placing them on a board or wall before organizing them into categories. Lastly, brainstorming with Mind Maps involves drawing a central idea or topic on paper or whiteboard and branching out with related ideas, concepts, or questions. The facilitator or group then connects the different mind maps and looks for commonalities and gaps.

2 Set the ground rules

Prior to brainstorming, it is essential to establish some ground rules that will foster a positive and encouraging atmosphere. These ground rules could include refraining from criticism or judgement, focusing on quantity over quality, building on each other's ideas, and respecting diversity and inclusion. Participants should be encouraged to share any thought that comes to them, regardless of how outlandish it may seem. Furthermore, instead of contradicting or competing with each other, participants should strive to improve or expand on one another's ideas. Finally, everyone should be given an equal chance to contribute and be heard without interruption or exclusion.
