In my experience, one of the very first steps to developing my own supervisory skills has been to always be aware of my own current levels of performance. Once I’m able to identify my strengths and weaknesses, I can then identify key areas of focus. I have always used continuous education to enhance my skills. “What are the top skillsets for my industry.” What new innovations our in use. I use productivity reports to assist in my self-evaluation tools, weekly and monthly. I use feedback from my peers and superiors. I use my prior performance reviews to set achievable goals for myself and my team, which provides me with more of a longterm view. Alignment with the organizational goals is the key. Never set set unrealistic goals.

Learning from others will get you everywhere. An example of this type of mindset is holding on to great assets, prior mentors. SMEs, networking, joining groupthink and focus groups that are within your industry, within your community and organization. Never being afraid to ask the individuals who are doing the work for updates and more.

Like many other attainable skills and attributes, supervisory skills are like a bottle of fine wine. It gets better as it ages as long as it is properly taken care of. Start by following the six steps mentioned here; it is a good place to start. You could always adjust by shifting your focus or adding/removing steps. Unless you fall off and follow the toxic path or bad habits, you will get better and more comfortable as a supervisor. So, grab that chance to be a supervisor, and then continue to seek other opportunities to lead, learn, and mentor. As I said, you will get better once you take that leap into the challenging but rewarding world of supervisory.
