Defining expectations is vital! Holding people accountable to provide feedback is imperative. It is one thing to define expectations but follow through is key. Many people say they have an open door policy but then reschedule meetings with their staff because something else came up. This tells staff they are not a priority.

Transparency is always best. Set the expectation that you have an open door policy and adhere to the open door policy, all feedback is helpful. Feedback helps organizations understand what the employees sees as positives and negatives. It provides an organization the opportunity to look at the issues and resolve them, provide additional training if needed.

Before trying to fix the 'giving' of feedback, first teach your people how to 'look for' and 'receive' feedback themselves. There's so much that can be learned from what you put in your calendar. If you can't take that feedback, there's little hope of receiving it from others. #JustSaying

Normalize feedback in all directions. In other words, don't limit feedback to management. Constructive, thoughtful feedback can be given laterally, or upwards, as well!

In order to encourage a feedback culture, you need to ensure that the organisation is a safe environment. Employees are always going to be reluctant in giving feedback because they are more than likely going to be faced with backlash. You first need to encourage them that this is a safe place and they will not face any repercussions for their honesty. Set the expectations but also make it a point to tell employees that feedback is important, their opinions matter and changes will happen.

Many leaders simply are not comfortable providing constructive feedback. Therefore the training piece is essential. Training needs to include role playing with practical scripts that mimic real life conversations. Immediate feedback is also critical so participants improve and to ensure that training transfer occurs and leaders are having good, constructive feedback discussions.
