How do you describe data architecture in a way that is easy to understand?

Think of it as the master plan that outlines the relationships between different data elements and systems, guiding the flow of information across the organization. It's like creating a roadmap that ensures data is not only available when needed but also in a format that makes sense for analysis and decision-making. Think about the foundation of a house, a solid data architecture provides stability and scalability. Just like a well-designed building, a thoughtfully crafted data architecture allows for future expansions and renovations without compromising the overall structure.

Data Architecture, in my view is the multilayered and multifunctional visual representation of data estate of an enterprise. Ideally spread across multiple documents which are versioned. The key representations are source system view, Analytical Data system view, Critical or base data models powering individual data stores which are designed more closer to the use-case they power. Then you have the authentication authorization and role base access control matrix. All of this merged together is the discipline called data architecture.

In my view data architecture is the system/capabilities landscape that process the data within a defined remit. This can be organisation or a business domain. The landscape defines how data in originated, transformed, consumed, fed into analytics/machine learning system and how is it destroyed. This is a set of platforms that are used to manage data - how the platforms interact and what are capabilities of those platform. Data model is a related as this demonstrated how data is stored and linked up and it part of the data architecture. Data architecture is one of 4 components defined in TOGAF In new era , data arch can also be described as data mesh where data products are like nodes and mesh is how they interact with other data products

You have to depict the flow of your organisation’s data architecture in a way that even a child can understand. Avoid technical jargon , special cases and complex scenarios. Draw your systems, how they feed your data warehouse, your bi tools etc. Keep your flow simple avoid complex tools that a stakeholder can not understand. Simplicity is the key, when stakeholders anticipate the basics of your architecture you can save much of time in future conversations.

Along with sources, the architecture also describes the HOW the data is sourced - the capabilities/tools/platforms that get/ingest the data or data can be pushed to the data store. Before big data, when the sources were simpler the data architecture was also simple as the data was mostly ingested as a batch and read from tables/files. With new types of data sources along with requirements to get in real time the architecture is changing

It all started with managing the data models, from different systems of different lines of the business. Required to have common standards for data elements and needed the support with policies to administer the models and standards. Then came the requirement for data quality, the need for analyze and report the data, that followed by defining the security and setting privacy. As part of the analysis, the concept of Data Warehousing got added and as part of reporting, Business Intelligence came into picture, followed by Industry specific regulatory compliance on what data need to be stored and what standard needs to be followed. All these collectively form the Data Architecture and DA team is expected to administer, manage and control it.

I’d describe data architecture as an all encompassing dataflow diagram that describes where data comes from and where it goes from end to end. It has multiple layers, such as the business process lens as well as the systems lens. What it should allow you to do is to see where manual processes are, where duplication of data capture and data storage may be, and then strategise on how to remediate or risk accept these.
