The first key decision must be the form factor. If you start with a Laptop, you must factor in screen size and resolution options, battery size, weight, etc. When choosing a desktop, how large of a box do you need? How portable does it need to be? The materials of the case can be steel, aluminum, composites, plastic, closed, open air, filtered vs unfiltered fans, lighting, Toolless vs standard screws, power supply (top or bottom), and how many drive bays do you need? Options for liquid cooling needed? Motherboard size, heat sink sizes, graphics card sizes for both single and multiple card setups. What is your expected life for the machine? Will you upgrade in 2-3 years or replace? Will you reuse or start fresh?

It all depends on how do you want to use the computer for. Lets say you want to play games, you might want to look into a custom desktop with a graphics card, with matching processors and an SSD. There can be a lot of varieties from small form factor desktop to high-end laptops depending on your needs.

It is a little bit more advanced, but do consider the architectural revisions on the components (Mainly Desktop components), more specifically the slots and sockets. eg. most manufacturers will upgrade their components socket every roughly 4 years. This can make a big impact in your upgrade compatibility as a lot of shops as soon as the next gen gets released they start phasing out the previous gen components. If you are in the market to build a quick office desktop or do not really consider upgrading it in a year or three then buy whats more affordable. Consider getting cutting edge (even if you have to save a bit more) but ensure you can upgrade or repair your system in the next 4 to 6 years

I would say the first decision is to figure out how much you want to spend and how much your budget (or significant other) will let you spend.

When assembling your system, make sure to always read the proper instruction and do a little bit of a research. Look up some tutorials on how to do it and if there's an expert with you, ask them some questions and they would gladly help you. For first time assembling can be challenging but it will always be worth it. Some tips that I can give is to make sure that the motherboard fits with your casing or you will have a hard time changing it back to the store.

When buying components, it is a good idea to begin laying out the parts in your chosen case. Do you need longer wire harnesses or connection adapters to use specific devices or to allow for extended wire runs? Cooling, does air flow over all of the needed areas in a sufficient manner? Ensure you have the right tools. Some new laptops require much smaller screwdriver heads than in the past. Do you have thermal paste for the heat sink mounting? Have an old towel to sit outside of the case to capture small screws instead of letting them hit a hard surface that will bounce them around, and you have a place to wipe off your fingers if you get something on them. Don't screw items in too tight because you can break circuit boards.

Your tools will depend on your case and other components. I have a pc repair kit and tools from doing corporate IT work. Instead of a flashlight I have an adjustable lamp. Also keep alcohol, Band-Aids or super glue (IYKYK) on hand. You will get cut on some things. Especially if you get a giant CPU cooler, or a cheap case. I have a mat for working on PC's, Laptops, electronics etc. I put music on, move the keyboard on my setup desk and have a blast. Life is easier. You should know there's not always instructions. Sometimes when there is, they're bad. Prepare to do research before hand and after. BIOS updating, drivers etc will be a thing. Setup depends on your goals, case etc. Cable management, component to case space ratio is a thing.

If you are installing an "established" operating system, look for and prepare an up to date installation media with a USB flash drive. If you can get the most current build with patches or download some of the major patches to expedite the post-install updates. If you don't have one already, have a USB Key with some troubleshooting tools such as the "SysInternals Suite" and/or PortableApps utilities for Windows systems. If you are running virtual machines, utilize a second physical drive to allow for maximum data throughput by splitting the load between your host system and the virtual machine virtual disks. If you use existing peripherals, do any need to be replaced? Look at your mouse, the button surfaces, keyboard key surfaces, etc.

If you're installing an OS on your own use YouTube. Search "How To Install x" and there will be a guide, step by step and thorough that will assist you all the way through. It isn't daunting at all. You will need another computer and a USB drive (save yourself some money and skip on the CD + Optical drive) to install ANY OS for FREE if you look carefully enough. Win 10 Activation is more like a service, now than in previous versions of Windows. Win 11 is not clearly superior to the average user for me to justify recommending it. I highly suggest anyone consider De-bloating new installations of Windows on Day 1. Again, YouTube/Google Search this process. Don’t forget to check if there are any firmware updates. These can be checked from the vendor site, and can make a big difference to performance, stability and security.

If you bought a GPU (Graphics Card or Graphics Processing Unit), make sure to always install the driver for it. Some other hardware might need drivers too, like your webcam or your Wi-Fi card but thanks to Windows 10, we don't have to do that anymore. But if you are not sure if you have the correct driver installed, there's a Third-Party software that can help you if you're using for personal use.

Be cautious when pulling drivers from any site. Consider first the OEM drivers and verify that the drivers are stable on the OS you've chosen to install. Depending on size of the mfg and the use case of the part, you may need to get a specialist to code a new driver or you might have to roll back your operating system by a version or two.

Here's your checklist: Connect machine to internet Web-search Item Name + Drivers. Go to only Manufacturer websites. Video Drivers Audio Drivers (often exist alongside Motherboard or Video drivers...) Motherboard BIOS & etc. (Read everything in its installation description carefully - they are clear. Get latest versions unless it says otherwise like install 1.0 before 1.1, etc.) Peripheral Drivers (e.g. Mouse/Keyboards - often update themselves or install when plugged in) Windows Update if using Windows (Press Windows Key > "Check for Updates". Windows will harass you until this is done.) Debloat Windows (disables telemetry/spying and frees a TON of resources) Install Utilities, Security and Maintenance programs Install YOUR stuff.

Make a checklist and note where you need to get the installation media, migrate specific settings from your old computer, and don't forget the key utilities such as antivirus, cloud storage, photo services, and any other "sync'ed" services.

Pick up the system, listen for loose noises such as a screw that might have fallen out. Make sure that all parts are secured and cables are properly routed and managed so as to not prevent airflow or sit against a part that might get hot and melt wires or start fires. Create your backup/recovery media and mark and store it. You should update this whenever you have a new OS point or full release, so mark the date on it too and store it in a known and secure place.

I am notorious for stress testing my builds. Benchmarks are ok but not always accurate. Even though mine rank higher than some higher end ones. I monitor and test things out. I pay attention to details. Like the setup up I'm on now, I built to be silent as well as a beast for what it is. I have a giant CPU cooler, high end fans and a case that designed for cooling, etc etc. I know when I hear the fans there's probably something up. Even then I know what's it's below any high temps, I know what temps are for winter and summer. The server I built, isn't quiet. Didn't build it to be. I basically gutted a PC given to me by a school. And reused the CP and ram. It works well too. I utilized monitoring tools as well as other methods.

Motherboard is often only important for the compatible CPU and Memory. To save money get the bare minimum case, power supply, and motherboard for your use. Many motherboards will come with enough space to upgrade your ram later so worry about the compatible memory and CPU first.

Set your budget first and set very big base to the system. Your monitor is something you can’t upgrade as a memory or HDD so better chose hi from the beginning. Motherboard is also a non easy to upgrade. Invest more from your budget on those two and upgrade the rest after time when the budget allows it. This can make a system last as much as 8-10 years. The computer case is also something to consider to. Start with these three and in time go higher for the rest components.

Research and build to your needs and wants. For mine I have an optical I/O for a sound bar as well as some other things. Set a budget but also understand that time is money. I've seen things bite people because they took so long looking for sales etc that warranties and/or return policies wore out. Companies are using data collected, sales don't happen like they use to. Also if you're waiting 3 months for like $20 off... bruh. Getting the correct item can save you in the long run. I kind of splurged on my main because I don't want to deal with issues. My other build, I just wanted to see if I could build a better PC for cheaper than the dell my school sent me. I did by $400 with better quality items. It could blow up, I wouldn't care.

If you are looking for a desktop or laptop make sure to search on line before you decide to start buying parts to build your own. Some times you may find the system you are looking for a good discounted price online from one of the trusted resellers. And if you still need to do a small upgrade like adding more RAM of replacing the hard drive to a larger capacity or to a SSD it may still be worth it to go this route.

That's why I preferred buying the motherboard/CPU bundle. I've become so spoiled with laptops at this point, I haven't used a desktop in years. When my laptop starts dying, I search for a replacement (typically refurbished) with a good amount of memory. I copy the files to the new computer and stash the old hard drive. If you're lucky, you might be able to reuse the memory; but, usually you're a generation behind by then anyway.
