I always begin my keynote presentations by telling a story that evokes emotion. Sometimes it is a surprising story, sometimes it is a funny story, sometimes it is a story that evokes fear. Captivating the emotional brain at the start of a talk engages the audiences' senses and makes your talk more memorable. When I want to share facts and data with the audience, I spend a lot time and energy thinking of an analogy or searching for a real-life case study to illustrate the message. This way the information that you are trying to share connects with the audience, rather than merely stating the data and facts to them.

2 Panel visuals

A panel is a moderated discussion among several speakers who share their perspectives and insights on a topic. It usually lasts between 45 to 90 minutes and aims to inform, educate, and debate the audience. Your visuals for a panel should be minimal, relevant, and supportive of your arguments. Avoid using slides as a crutch or a script. Instead, use them as a reference or a supplement to your verbal communication. I don't make use of visuals when facilitating panel discussions. Different to a keynote, a panel discussion could twist and turn based on the commentary from the speakers. I prepare the topics and potential questions for each speaker in advance. I discuss topics with the speakers, but avoid sharing the exact list of questions. The best panels are when the participants are engaging in a moderated conversation rather than reading a script of pre-rehearsed answers. I leave space for the conversation to take its course, while ensuring each speaker gets airtime and that we are not deviating from the panel topic. Visuals may lead to a rigid panel stuck to the prepared plan and loses the opportunity to go with the flow of the conversation.

A workshop is a hands-on session that teaches the audience a specific skill or technique. It usually lasts between 60 to 180 minutes and aims to instruct, guide, and practice the audience. Keynotes are a one way street from the speaker to the audience, workshops are two way streets with information flowing in both directions. Workshops need to have practical exercises with ample opportunity for discussion and engagement with your audience. No two workshops should be the same as it will be shaped by your attendees. Visuals to accompany your workshop will need to be interesting and instructive. Your visuals are an aid to structure your workshop and keep the attendees on track. I often introduce a topic using a enticing visual and share some information. I then use a slide to ask a question to open the floor for discussion or would introduce a practical an exercise on that topic.

A webinar is a live or recorded presentation that delivers valuable content to a remote audience. It usually lasts between 30 to 90 minutes and aims to attract, convert, and retain the audience. Your visuals for a webinar should be captivating, informative, and persuasive. Avoid using slides as a filler or a distraction. Visuals for a webinar keynote would be similar to the visuals I would use for an in-person keynote. Key differences in the presentation would be the energy I receive back from the audience. During an in-person event, when sharing a surprising or shocking visual, I wait for the audience to react before speaking. During a webinar, I wouldn't have as long a pause as I can't feel or see the feedback from the audience. I just hope that the impact is the same as the ones I witness when we are in the room together. I have also used video content for webinars, which I haven't used for an in-person event. Different formats also increase attention span, especially for webinars where it is more difficult to sustain attention for extended periods.

I generally avoid words in my slides. I try find pictures to depict my message, or use snippets from news headlines to introduce a topic or story. When I do need to use words, I try to incorporate them into a graphic. My words come out of my mouth, not through my slides.
