In design, a focal point is the element that draws the viewer's eye and communicates the main message or purpose of your work. It can be a logo, a headline, an image, or anything else that stands out and conveys meaning. But how do you create a focal point that captures attention and guides the viewer through your design? Here are some tips and techniques to help you achieve this goal.
Contrast is the difference between two or more elements in terms of color, size, shape, texture, or value. Contrast creates visual interest and hierarchy, making some elements more noticeable than others. You can use contrast to create a focal point by making it different from the rest of your design. For example, you can use a bright color against a dark background, a large font against a small one, or a smooth shape against a rough one.
Como artista plastico, cuando quiero dirigir, donde comienza un espectador a ver una obra, y el ritmo que quiero que siga con la mirada, lo realizo 1ro. Si deseo que la vista se pose sobre un lugar en particular, lo realizo a través de un punto de color que inconcientemente atraiga la atencion del espectador. 2do. Si quiero que sigan un ritmo ( donde comienza y donde termina) se logra a través de ritmos visuales( formas y lineas) que guian la mirada del espectador por la obra. Focul Point in any creative, I believe is not one but three to four at max. Now contrast plays here as how we guide the shift of focus. Not necessarily the large object will draw attention first. If it is a minimalistic creative, even the small element that is used in white space will draw attention first. Let's move to my next insight for more holistic understanding.

The focal element does require contrast. True. I, however, would challenge that and illuminate the concept of hierarchy over contrast to describe how to build out a focal point. Hierarchy is the importance you put on each element. It allows the viewer to see things in a certain order, starting with a focal. Contrast can add dynamic to an otherwise boring layout and can heighten the accessibility of your design. It can assist dyslexic learners in understanding your typography better and helps people with visual impairments including colour blindness.
Alignment is the way you arrange elements in relation to each other and to the edges of your design. Alignment creates order and balance, making your design look organized and professional. You can use alignment to create a focal point by breaking it or using it intentionally. For example, you can use a center alignment to emphasize a symmetrical element, or a diagonal alignment to create dynamic movement.
I agree with the insight given above. We can always play with alignment even to create chaos. Alignment is not just a very formal way of presenting elements. Even to create a funky creative, alignment should be maintained. Alignment is the relation between two elements. Alignment combined with Distance creates the sense of primary and secondary focal points.
Repetition is the use of the same or similar elements throughout your design. Repetition creates unity and consistency, making your design look cohesive and harmonious. You can use repetition to create a focal point by varying it or using it sparingly. For example, you can use a different color or shape for one element to make it stand out, or use a single element to create a pattern or a rhythm.
Repetition is a very handy tool to convey a basic message very easily. Repetition of any particular element can create a pattern which without taking any main space in the creative can convey significant specification of your product.
Scale is the relative size of elements in your design. Scale creates proportion and emphasis, making some elements more dominant or subordinate than others. You can use scale to create a focal point by enlarging it or reducing it. For example, you can use a large image or text to attract attention, or a small detail to create curiosity.
If you have gone through my insight on Contrast, you know how Scale and Contrast are an important combination to create multiple focal points. A large element in most cases attracts eyes first but it is again depending on the Opacity and color of the element. i.e. if the background is black and we use a large blue text on one side and another yellow element smaller in size, which do you think is the primary focal here?
I like the use of scale for this particular reason because you can essentially direct the attention and express emphasis of your design message the way you intend on it to be perceived.
Whitespace is the empty space between and around elements in your design. Whitespace creates breathing room and focus, making your design look clean and clear. You can use whitespace to create a focal point by surrounding it or isolating it. For example, you can use a lot of whitespace to frame an element and make it more prominent, or use a little whitespace to separate an element and make it more distinct.
Number five says "use whitespace" but I think it may be better to phrase it as "use negative spaces" be aware of forms within forms, and the tangents and balance that compose the canvas around your focal point
Direction is the way you guide the viewer's eye through your design. Direction creates flow and logic, making your design look readable and understandable. You can use direction to create a focal point by leading to it or away from it. For example, you can use arrows, lines, curves, or gestures to point to an element and make it more important, or use negative space, contrast, or alignment to create a visual path that leads to an element and makes it more meaningful.
Angle can play an important role in your creative when used with appropriate shapes. i.e. if we turn any rectangular shapes or lines 45 degree (diagonal) it creates a sense of barrier in front of back of other elements. But if we do the same to a square element, it is either a great highlighter or a mask.
I agree with the design principles presented above. One additional aspect I'd like to emphasize is "Connection." Before considering the principles mentioned, contemplate what resonates with the audience you're trying to engage. Understand your audience first, and then focus on how to communicate with them effectively.
