1 Know your purpose

Before you start writing your questions, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your interview. What is the main topic or theme of your production? What is the angle or perspective you want to explore? What is the message or takeaway you want to convey? Having a purpose will help you focus your questions on the most important and relevant aspects of your interviewee's story.

2 Research your interviewee

The more you know about your interviewee, the better you can tailor your questions to their background, interests, and personality. Research their biography, achievements, opinions, and challenges. Find out what makes them unique, passionate, or controversial. Use online sources, social media, previous interviews, or referrals to gather information. You can also contact your interviewee in advance and ask them some general questions to establish rapport and get a sense of their style and tone.

3 Plan your structure

A good field interview should have a logical and coherent structure that guides the conversation and keeps the audience engaged. A common structure is to start with an icebreaker, then move to the main body, and end with a wrap-up. An icebreaker is a simple and friendly question that helps your interviewee relax and warm up. The main body is where you ask the most relevant and interesting questions that relate to your purpose. The wrap-up is where you summarize the main points, thank your interviewee, and ask them if they have anything else to add or share.

4 Write open-ended questions

Open-ended questions are questions that require more than a yes or no answer. They encourage your interviewee to elaborate, explain, or give examples. They also allow for more flexibility, creativity, and spontaneity in the conversation. Open-ended questions usually start with words like how, why, what, when, where, or who. For example, instead of asking "Do you like your job?", you can ask "What do you enjoy most about your job?" or "How did you get into this field?"

The more vivid the response, the better. Ask interviewees to provide details that help paint a picture. For example, instead of simply asking “can you tell me all about that fateful day?”, you can ask them to walk you through it. “Describe that day from the moment you woke up,” you can suggest. You may want to ask about the weather, what they were wearing, what they had eaten. Small details can help bring stories to life and reveal aspects of the interviewee’s memory that are critical to good storytelling.

5 Avoid leading or biased questions

Leading or biased questions are questions that suggest or imply a certain answer or opinion. They can make your interviewee feel pressured, defensive, or uncomfortable. They can also affect the credibility and objectivity of your production. Leading or biased questions usually contain words like always, never, should, or must. For example, instead of asking "Don't you think this policy is unfair?", you can ask "How do you feel about this policy?" or "What are the pros and cons of this policy?"

6 Be prepared to adapt

Even if you have prepared your questions carefully, you may need to adapt them depending on the situation and the response of your interviewee. You may need to ask follow-up questions to clarify, probe, or expand on something your interviewee said. You may need to skip, rephrase, or reorder some questions if they are not relevant, appropriate, or clear. You may need to improvise some questions if something unexpected or interesting happens. The key is to listen actively, be flexible, and follow the flow of the conversation.

Exactly, be prepared so you can be spontaneous. Listen, really listen and don't just wait to ask the next question on your list (whether you wrote them or someone else did). Ask the interviewee to expand on an answer if something piques your interest or if they revealed something they hadn't said before. Listen attentively, nod, slightly smile if appropriate, be human, be curious, be interested. People often tell me "I've never told anyone this" or "thank you, I was really nervous but I really like talking to you." Make sure you're getting what post needs in terms of full answers that don't require your question as set up. You'll be able to start hearing pull-ups, what part of the bite will definitely make it to the show, etc.

This is perhaps one of the most important parts of interviewing: listening actively. It doesn’t matter what questions you are prepared to ask, what matters more is how you will listen. The listening and what you hear will inform your questions.

I learned my first lesson in journalism (that also serves me now as a coach) during an interview with Diane Sawyer in 1994. She said, “Never, ever give the subject of your interview your questions.” I showed up, at age 14, with a whole list of questions. She asked to see them and promptly tossed them aside before giving me that lesson. A few months later, during an interview with Leeza Gibbons said something about listening and pointed to her ear. In that moment, which I can relive because it is on video, I started listening and became much more present in the moment.

if the interviewee asks for the questions in advance, you can say, "I just want you to answer from your experience and perspective. I'll be asking similar things to what we are speaking about during our conversations." You can give them some topics you'll cover but you don't want them to rehearse and sound stilted, they won't be present and viewers will immediately feel that.
