How do you craft a compelling research gap in your LOI?

You will always need strong preliminary data. No matter how innovative your technology is, you're standing on the shoulders of those who came before you. Befriend the scientific community around your subject matter and assume a seat at the table instead of communicating that you're disruptive. Your LOI should spark interest, not concerns that you're out of your mind.

Start by telling a story that highlights the pressing need your research will address. As an example: in crafting a compelling research gap for a public health grant LOI, I started by illustrating a community grappling with a significant health issue, such as high rates of preventable diseases due to lack of access to basic health resources. I highlighted data that underscores the broader impact of this gap on public health and identified a specific void in current research or interventions. By positioning the project as a targeted solution to this pressing issue, I demonstrated its potential to make a meaningful impact, thereby making a strong case for funding.

In a recent livelihood grant submission, I strategically aligned the research gap with the funder’s goal of economic empowerment. While you may describe your technology as disruptive, this screams uncertainty to a funding institution, no matter how they frame their solicitation. Show strong support and precedence if you truly want the highest likelihood of success.
