How do you compare and integrate ultrasonic testing with other NDT methods?

RT is also better at finding volumetric flaws whereas as UT will be more sensitive to linear indications. It all goes back to the damage mechanism that is suspected.

Both RT & UT have benefits as well as some limitations... the major gap was the feasibility of record in case of RT which was not possible in UT in old days... but this gap is now eliminated by advance UT where the records can be preserved. RT is not suitable for the defects which are oriented in the direction perpendicular to radiation beam. Hence, additional UT is must in such cases... similarly, in case of UT, defects paralle to sound beam are not detected so additional RT is must in these cases.. this is the reason when a procedure is prepared, one shall study the part geometry & expected defects with its orientation. Scan plan in UT & shooting sketch in RT helps a lot to take such decisions.

Each method has its strengths, but UT’s versatility and efficiency make it a top choice across industries.

Both bring valuable strengths to non-destructive testing. UT is exceptional for detecting internal flaws and measuring material thickness, making it essential for evaluating the internal integrity of welds, castings, and structural components. Conversely, MT is particularly effective for identifying surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials, such as cracks and seams. While UT offers depth and precision in flaw detection, MT is excellent for quickly and accurately identifying surface discontinuities. Combining both methods provides a comprehensive approach, ensuring thorough evaluation and enhanced safety in industrial applications.

UT & MT both go hand in hand... where UT is performed with single crystal probe, it is difficult to detect near surface defects due to behaviour of sound near entry surface. This is because of the pressure created by the condensed sound beam in the near field area. Hence, before performing UT, it is always recommended to perform MT. If access is restricted to perform MT, additional UT scan with specific probes & equipment settings like focussing is mandatory. But replacing UT by MT is not possible...

UT vs ET: ET is great for surface and near-surface flaws in conductive materials, but UT excels in detecting deeper internal flaws across a wider range of materials.

UT is a more convenient method for handling and finding the defects, in that cast iron material UT does not perform as well because the material structure is different so sound energy will be lost, this is the drawback

With the valuable & useful advancements, UT became more important in various fields like flaw detection, corrosion mapping, failure analysis, product development etc. UT have its own advantages & also limitations. UT can be integrated with other NDT methods, however, it is purely case based decision. The user shall give a fare consideration to the application & the end result. The most important fact is, all NDTs are effective only when the instrument & systems are accurate & the person is having higher skills & knowledge. An integrated NDT system is much more effective when it is properly established by demonstration & have the capacity of repeatability with same results.

The past 30 years have seen some amazing advances in NDT, these have principally come about due to improvements in computing power. So you need to consider what type of UT when making a decision. In addition to manual UT we have Time of Flight Diffraction (for cracks), Phased Array UT (for those difficult to get to areas) and the addition of computerised mapping systems, that provide a far better "record" than radiographic film. Then we have the choice between manual, automated and semi automated deployment. The decision making is subtle and complex while making the wrong choice can have catastrophic consequences. My advice, as usual, is consult with an expert.
