How do you communicate risk culture in your framework?

Create teams at different operational levels, starting from the very top. The teams should cross sectional for example employees from sales, risks, finance should be working together. The corporate message should be that Risk is not just the issue of Risk Management department, it is to be understood at multiple functional areas. The teams would break up silos and build a cohesive culture.

Begin by aligning risk appetite with the organization's strategic objectives. Identify the goals and outcomes the organization aims to achieve and assess the level of risk that is acceptable in pursuit of these objectives. Determine the organization's risk tolerance, which is the degree of variability or uncertainty it is willing to accept in achieving its objectives. This involves specifying the level of risk the organization considers acceptable. Consider how resources, including time, manpower, and budget, will be allocated to manage and mitigate risks. Define the priorities for risk mitigation efforts based on the organization's risk appetite.

To communicate risk culture in an IT framework, focus on leadership example, clear policies, training, reporting mechanisms, regular communication, risk metrics, cultural integration, scenario planning, continuous improvement, and transparency.

Risk culture is a generic aspect that goes beyond formalized procedures and processes. It is about the way your people understand and act and react from risk perspective. Riskvappetite and risk tolerance set the tone and this tone comes from the top - management. It also should be applied from the top down to each ofthe operational and non-operational team members.

Involves fostering an environment where employees understand, embrace, and manage risks effectively. It starts with clear leadership support and communication of risk tolerance. Encourage open dialogue where employees feel safe to report risks and mistakes. Implement risk assessment and mitigation processes that are accessible and well-documented. Main stake holders - management. So define and align with them what you define. They are the ones that validate. Align with the other - business, support services, operational teams, etc. Take and consider their perspective and impact on them. Communicate on the benefits and be considerate of the restrictions you wish or you impose. Compromises and balance are always the way business is done, you need to find the best and most suited and appropriate

There are two ways in engaging with Stakeholders. First stakeholder are the people whose actions can lead to an risk event and second stakeholder is the management who needs to take action/decision. For the first stakeholders, conduct Risk Control and Self Assessment exercises with the employees of relevant departments. This will create awareness and also list down all the risks involved and areas where risk mitigation is required. For the second stakeholder, conduct a High Level Risk Assessment exercise involving the Management along with key heads of departments. This will give the management an overall risk picture of the business and help to focus on the most important or key ones. It would also help in creating an MIS for monitoring.

Start by identifying key stakeholders, including employees, leaders, and external partners. Share the organization's risk management vision and strategy with them through transparent and regular communication channels, such as meetings, newsletters, and workshops. One of the important thing that should get communicated through various trainings is what is the Risk Tolerance Level of the organisation. What will be the impact if these tolerance levels are breached. Mandatory self learning online courses should be designed and rolled out.

Security awareness training and education for staff is almost as important as the developed processes. Consider whether there is such a thing at "risk culture". Does it exist as a distinct category or is it really just how your corporate culture considers and manages risk? Can risk culture exist in isolation? I don't believe it does and time and money spend only on risk culture is wasted. The focus needs to be on how the overarching, and sub-cultures, within the organisation support good risk management decisions.

Essentially, you need to ensure that every responsible function/department understands their role when it comes to the management of risk in the organization. You would necessarily need to assign them their individual roles per the Three Lines of Defense in risk management. In this way, they know and accept how their actions and/or inactions affect the success of the organization.
