1 What is wavelet transform?

Wavelet transform is a technique that decomposes a signal into different frequency components, each with a different resolution or scale. Unlike Fourier transform, which uses fixed basis functions that are sinusoidal and infinite, wavelet transform uses flexible basis functions that are localized and finite. Wavelets are an appropriate analysis tool for signals with multiple scales, i.e., both slow varying and fast varying features. The associated basis functions are constant Q functions. Low frequency functions have smaller bandwidth while higher frequency functions have larger bandwidth.

Wavelet transform are powerful tool to both analyze and filter a non-stationary signal in joint time-frequency domain. However, there are other time-frequency signal analysis and decomposition methods that can be employed for signal analysis/filtering. These include short time Fourier transform, filter banks/channelizers, empirical mode decomposition methods, instantaneous frequency estimation methods and quadratic time-frequency distributions.
