There are two perspectives. Define your long term goals, say three years, then define your current year goals aligned with three years goals. Remember current year goals must be specific and measurable.

To select the right quality and change models for your organization, consider your needs, goals, culture, and the nature of the changes you plan to implement. Different models offer unique approaches and tools for quality management and change management. Assess your organization's needs, objectives, culture, stakeholder input, research available models, evaluate model suitability, align with goals, consider resource availability, compatibility with existing systems, and assess education and training needs. Establish a feedback loop and develop a comprehensive change management plan.

Define your goals When I worked as a Quality Consultant with smaller privately own companies the goal was to implement a Quality Management System that met the requirements of ISO 9001. The standard defined the elements to be addressed. The complexity of company processes determined the timeline. The registrar measured the effectives of the implemented QMS to the standard and recommended certification if successful. The annual surveillance audits ensured continued compliance with recertification every 3 years.

Assess your situation from three perspectives. People, Process, Technology. People in terms of behavioural traits, process for capability and Technology for capability. Any change strategy must consider these three dimensions.

Assess your situation The first step when working with a client was to conduct a gap analysis against the ISO standard, this meant reviewing their existing processes, some were documented others were not. This led to creating a list of action items to fill the gaps with agreed about timelines.

Compare your options ISO 9001 is an International Standard that can be implemented across many industries, types of manufacturing processes, product assembly or service providers so meeting the requirements of ISO 9001 can be achieved in many ways. It is important to understand the processes within a business and how best to design the new process to meet the standards requirements. It is often necessary to adjust the solutions a number of times, using the Plan, Do, Check, Act tool to asses the changes to verify effective works well in this situation.

Choose your model Implementation of a quality system impacts all business processes, therefore there are many opportunities to utilize a number of different models. PDCA works well if you know the solution and want to verify effectiveness, Six Sigma methodology to assess more complex projects with multiple root causes and lean methodology to reduce waste.

Implement and evaluate your model One of the key elements of implementing an ISO 9001 QMS is training all employees on the elements and impact of changes required to achieve certification to the standard. It is important to keep employees informed of the details of the implementation process and progress. The Internal Audit process required by the ISO standard gives the perfect way to evaluate the effectiveness of the changes implemented, the corrective action process enables changes required to close any gaps and the Interested Parties requirement ensures everyone is consulted for input and informed of all relevant changes.

The ISO 9001 standard specifies the requirements to be met, there are many variations on solutions to meet the standard, it is important to take the following into consideration when implementing a Quality Management System: Complexity of the business Company culture Customer requirements Always keep it simple, do as you document!!

The factors to consider when making your choice: 1)The nature of the change. What kind of change are you trying to implement? Is it a small change or a large-scale transformation? 2)The size and complexity of your organization. How many people are involved? How complex are the processes? 3)The culture of your organization. How receptive is your organization to change? 4)The resources available. How much time, money, and expertise do you have? 5)The desired outcome. What do you hope to achieve with the change? 6)Talk to other people who have implemented similar changes. They can share their experiences and insights. 7)Pilot test the model. Try out the model in a small-scale project before you implement it on a larger scale.

ISO9001 standard and like many other standards are based on averages. By meeting standard it does not mean that your organization excel. In order to have competive advantage you need understand how you distuinguish among your competion and add value to your customers. You dont want to rely on averages when you are finding your competive edge.
