How do you choose between a cobot and a robot for your automation project?

Choosing between a cobot and a robot hinges on your specific project requirements. Cobots shine in scenarios where human collaboration is essential, promoting flexibility and efficiency. Robots excel in highly repetitive, hazardous, or large-scale operations, where automation without human interaction is critical. A cobot can simulate a robot. Not the opposite. So that, anytime you are starting a new project, you have to ask yourself: "do I need highest acceleration and most performing speed OR can I accept slower speed, lower precision with a possibility to enhance my industrial shopfloor in terms of safety and productivity”?

Simple definition is Cobot is a collaborative robots which coexists with human beings and have high safety features and norms where as robots are automations for repetitive tasks. Cobots are meant to augment humans by supporting the repetitive aspects while the human does the varying or artistic elements where a robot is ill-suited. If throughput is a primary concern, a robot is likely a better choice.

Actually, I disagree with the last statement. I have noticed that human workers are always happy that they have robots for some of the repetitive tasks. Robots, these days, are so reliable that if programmed and configured correctly in the beginning, you don't have to look at them again for years. They just work. I have dealt with some Fanuc robots. Other than some minor maintenance once in a while, no issues with the robots. They just work as they are configured to.

When considering cobots or robots for automation projects, several challenges arise. Cobots, while safer and easier to work alongside humans, have limitations in force, speed, and reach, often requiring more human supervision and maintenance. They may not be ideal for tasks needing high precision or consistency and could encounter ethical and social issues related to trust and acceptance. Conversely, robots tend to be more expensive and complex to install and program, lacking flexibility and adaptability. They also pose safety risks if not properly isolated from humans and could lead to job displacement or dissatisfaction among the workforce.

It depends on the use case and industry mainly !! Both Robots and cobots are to solve specific problem statements. Be it store replenishment, warehouse picking , packer delivery a Cobot might make more sense whereas if it’s a task like unloading , palletization ; robot may make more sense !!

The importance here is knowledge—the knowledge of the product, the knowledge of the thruput, and the knowledge of the task. Getting a diverse team of engineers, production workers that currently do the task, and management is important. You may also want a trusted outside partner involved, in some cases, that is the robot manufacturer and in others it will be the OEM of choice.

In some cases, you can take cobots and use them as robots. This requires exceeding the safety limits, but they are designed to allow this. So, for example, you can have a cobot move at high speeds in one area where humans are not present and, in other areas, meet all the safety requirements to work where humans are present.
