How do you choose the best maintenance staff?

In the interview, I'll assess candidates for their technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills, as these are essential for efficient maintenance. Their adaptability and ability to handle unexpected challenges will also be evaluated. A strong track record of reliability and responsibility in past roles is a key indicator of their suitability. Furthermore, their attitude and enthusiasm for the role are vital, as a positive mindset can greatly enhance their contributions to our maintenance team.

In my opinion, experience, work history and personal life experiences are to be considered as important. Communication can be tricky, you can have the best maintenance operator in front of you, but if he’s an introvert, you will passed on a good hire. Operators who talk a lot, don’t walk the walk! The quiet ones are the ones that pay attention to details, they walk into a mechanical room and know something is wrong just by listening to the equipment, and they will tell you what you need to solve an issue, they will jump in to action when emergencies happens knowing how to mitigate and solve problems.

Attitude and manners in first place then experience, practice and problem solving skills. Provide training program for other needs to integrate with the team work

The most important considerations are aptitude, experience, capacity to learn and the level of exposure to the company's technology. The candidate should be also self driven to learn, update themselves with emerging technologies and solve problems

One thing I have found very helpful is asking the question "Can you read a ruler?" The question can seem unfeeling but it's relevant in many ways. One way is that the candidates positive attitude and reply can mean they are teachable. On the other hand, hesitation or a negative posture could mean they struggle with that area. It doesn't mean they are a poor candidate, it may be something else. All candidates may have the basics of calculation but it's the ones that can be taught that will shine brighter. Just remember NO candidate is going to know everything. There WILL be some amount of teaching on all candidates.

For me, the most important factor when bringing in maintenance staff is that they are the 'right fit' for the company, particularly if they are expected to work as part of a team. Of course the relevant skillset and knowledge is important, as is experience and more specific knowledge of your equipment and systems. However brining someone in with a poor attitude can cause significant issues within a group. It can be hard to judge a persons attitude and work ethic in an interview process but tailored questions can help with getting a good insight into this.

During the interview process, hard skills and mainly soft skills need to be explored. Nowadays soft skills are the most valuable tools to have persons ready for your challenges. Normally it’s easier give knowledge than improve behavior that fits with maintenance and company core values. Try to find the right person for the right place and then will deliver the best results.

You already know that selecting a right person for the job will be hard. Probably you wont find the right person in first run. Important thing is don't give up
