I agree the time investment and the main goal(s) are important. Remember the first objective of any portfolio is to preserve your savings from the erosion of inflation. But it should be considered what risk means for you. Cash is risky due to possibly countries bankruptcy. Bonds are a promise of payment. You are never sure 100% of getting your money back. Stock markets fluctuate and you will have to endure periods of latent losses. Warren Buffet first and more important rule is "Don't lose money".

There is no asset class that has performed consistently over the last 25 years. Your goals are an important starting point based on which you can allocate your capital to different asset classes. Say your kid is going to the university in the next 2 years. You want to preserve that capital in a very low-risk instrument like a fixed deposit rather than putting in equity. But, if you are retiring in 30 years, you can't possibly grow money just by relying on fixed deposits as the value of your money is eroded by inflation. You need to take some risk of equities. Decide the asset class based on your personal goal.

The performance of different asset classes depends on the economic environment, the interest rates, the inflation, the political situation, and other factors. I personally stay away from bonds during a volatile interest rate environment. Within equity itself, you can rotate your capital from cyclical like consumer discretionary to more defensive sectors like healthcare during a recession. You can also increase dividend portfolio as they tend to be more stable. Gold during recessionary times has performed better than other asset classes. Of course, you need to evaluate interest rates here as gold likes inflation but not aggressive interest rates.
