How do you check if your graphic designs are user-friendly?

Before you start designing, you must know about the 5W's ( Who, What, When, Why, Where ) It is the best approach to understand the complexity of problems and helps to create human-centered design concepts. It guides and boosts our design decision.

To ensure your designs are user-friendly, consider conducting usability testing with a diverse group of users. Gather feedback on navigation, clarity, and overall user experience to identify areas for improvement.

Most designs are now viewed on digital devices, particularly mobile. For this reason, it's recommended to use large, bold fonts and simple graphics.

By defining the aim, such as enhancing user experience or communicating a message, you may clearly define your design goals. Determine the tastes, requirements, and interests of your target audience to customize the design. By connecting your objectives and target market, you can make sure that your design speaks to its audience in an engaging way.

Design is the art of creating for someone else. In this way, design principles, best practices, and design systems not only create familiarity and consistency in what you create, but they also help you work through the your ideas faster – you're less worried about remembering what you did in other places, and more focused on what you want to do next. In a way, design systems are like your own miniature, automated Art Director. And the best part? You designed it, too. However, they should always only be useful, and not restrictive; the "right" way to create a design system is to create the one that is useful to you. If you don't need 15 type styles and 25 shades of a brand color, then your design system doesn't need it either.

Assess contrast ratio: Ensure it meets accessibility standards for text and elements. Evaluate clarity of purpose: Determine if the design effectively communicates its intended message. User interactions: Examine the extent of user engagement and interactions, considering factors such as the number of clicks, scrolls, or actions needed to achieve their objectives. Other examples include assessing the intuitiveness of navigation and the ease of accessing essential information. Device and Screen Compatibility: Ensure the design is tested on various devices, screens, orientations, and resolutions to guarantee its responsiveness and usability across different platforms and user contexts.

Find out where your design will be used. Design sustainably by following visual design principles, such as grouping principles.

Think of your audience. What is user friendly for one may be uncomfortable for the other. You will naturally not make the same design for a corporate annual report as you would for a children's book. You'd think of a different set of constraints while designing for digital media. Sometimes one makes infographics that are bold and stand out from within tons of text in a report. The idea is creating hierarchy in what the audience should see first and what next and then what. So "user-friendly" is directly depended on the a. user, b. the emphasis required in their content and c. the medium of dissemination.

It’s important to not just test the usability of the design, but the clarity of the communication. It doesn’t help to have a nice answer button if the question is ambiguous! Clarity in communication in the basis of all good design.

Assume and turn the assumptions into valuable insights by testing the design on as many and varied users as possible. One is better than none.

Knowing it takes user's brain around 0.5sec to decide if the design is clear and trustworthy or not. So I always test my design with an eye tracking simulator based on AI such as Attention Insight or Visual eye. It helps me to identify clearly if the layout is well structured and which element catch user's attention during the first seconds.

Consider accessibility in your designs. There are a host of online tools to help you check contrast and sizing for designs. Are my colours accessible is a great starting point.

Start small, deliver a minimum viable design that gives enough value. Go from there. This isn't always possible, so find out if an iterative approach is possible before you assume that you can design this way.

Experiment and explore. Don't cram your design and process into trends unless the market and consumer benefits from trending design. Tried and true may be slower, and can last longer.
