How do you build trust as a trainer?

as a trainer, important for us to make sure that we know exactly what our audience need in training program. after that, we can build trust with start class with small talk and build rapport with your audience.

I review my audience's LinkedIn profiles and personally message them ahead of our training and encourage them to review my profile. Then they get to see what LinkedIn can really do for personal branding, using myself, a LinkedIn trainer and coach as an example. I memorize headshots and greet them by name as I first meet them. This builds trust and sends a powerful message that they are about to embark on a new learning adventure, talking about themselves effectively.

True. It’s important to collect information of training needs but to be honest we shouldn’t take this to heart too much. A training many a times is needed to make the Learners to think beyond the obvious. So take inputs but ensure there is at least one X factor which ensures the Learners are pulled out of their comfort zone.

My expertise and clear communication simplify complex topics. I'm empathetic, adapting to learners' needs, and fostering engagement. Transparency, active listening, and respect create an inclusive environment. Reliability is essential, and I value feedback. I maintain professionalism, use credible sources, and aim for tangible outcomes. Long-term relationships and admitting mistakes are part of my approach. Trust, I believe, grows through competence, commitment, and ethical conduct demonstrated consistently.

Rehearse but during the delivery it’s important to be an active listener as well. The trainer should be able to modify the content on the go, if need be.

Live examples, case studies etc add authenticity to the training program. The trainer should always be aware that the Learners are the priority & keep their personal opinions aside.

One need not reinvent the wheel & history repeats. These 2 points could be presented in a palatable way. The learners should be able to relate to the trainer and should feel connected. No one is above failure & it’s next to impossible to be successful always. These are the next 2 messages that should consistently delivered. Thus the importance of being receptive, humble & working together would be understood in a subtle way.

I personally have seen the benefit of utilising technology. On invitation basis, the Learners get an opportunity to be part of a functional, goal based WhatsApp group that has the only agenda to ensure the learning percolates into the psyche and reflects in the performance of individuals & teams.

In my experience, when I used to train, I would start by telling the learners all about my experience, skills and knowledge based on the topics that I was going to cover. For example, I had been a senior manager in many roles before I was a trainer, so it wasn’t a case of do as I say, it was a case of do as I have done, and I can provide specific examples to help the learners in the real world.

Having trained and managed training services across a range of environments from military to new homes construction all have consistently benefited from critical fundamental behaviours, values and understanding: - Training teams must demonstrate passion, commitment and subject knowledge. - No two sessions will be the same, even with the same students, everyone learns differently. Pace, style and delivery methods should not be static or default. - keep material and content relevant, can the learner relate it back to their world. - Training/ teaching well is a skill and keeping fresh and sharp takes self investment not dissimilar to a sports profession.
