On the path of learning web development I always prefer an approach that I call as know everything - master one thing. So, when a person is a beginner, he has a wish of learning each and everything in the market. In this process, he ignores the quality of learning. Example, you are a backend developer like me and you are trying to learn typescript or node js but suddenly you find python more interesting and suddenly you find PHP more interesting. My advice is DO NOT switch to any other language before completing what you have started. Though knowing the basics of others is a good advantage. Choose any one technology or language and master it but know sufficient about other popular technology. Expertise is most important.

I started as a self thought developer and after 3 years I also earned a degree. Having a degree is not mandatory, but it's always a plus - always an opportunity to learn more and grow. So what I can say is that if you have the opportunity to earn a degree you should go for it. It is most useful for DSA and backend development. On the flip side - you are not less of a developer if you do not have a degree so do not let anyone get to you. Just understand that companies have different preferences & practices when it comes to hiring new developers. Look for companies that value your experience.

Becoming a web developer requires a learner attitude because herr everything keeps updating daily, so you have to learn new things daily. I started learning backend development first with Flask, with basic of HTML/CSS using static pages. Later on, I had to develop website for an organisation on Wordpress, with just that basic knowledge, and 2-3 YouTube videos about WordPress, I was able to develop a website. From my experience, I feels if you make even a single website, with WordPress or any framework, and host it, you get confidence enough to make any website in future. So start learning the basics and try making projects, even your portfolio on WordPress will help you learn many things, how to connect database & how to host, etc.

There are several tangential technical avenues to web-development, but equally as important. The two that top the list for are Site Reliability (SRE)/DevOps Engineers and Quality Assurance Engineers. SREs and DevOps engineers focus more on infrastructure such as cloud services automation and management, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. They are responsible for making sure that all the stuff that the front end and back end run on will scale up easily as the user base grows. QA Engineers focus on writing code to capture defects before they make it to production. The level of testing that a QA engineer covers is usually much more broad sweeping and in-depth than what the developer would write.

My one piece of advice on how to learn to be a web dev is to pick up JS, pick a framework, and start building. That will help you speak to the framework and learnings when trying to get an entry level position. Frankly, for all levels of UI engineers people care about your thought process and how you solved a complex problem.
