How do you become a visiting professor?

#1. Establish yourself as a 'public academic', and an int'l scholar who is an expert researcher and active practitioner within your field(s) of expertise. #2. Focus on 3R - Be Referred, Respected, and Relevant. And, work hard to produce quality academic work to present at int'l conferences and to publish in journals. #3. Continue to innovate and enhance your skills and knowledge together with becoming an active public advocate who focuses on critical societal issues. #4. Try your luck by sending 'cold emails' to other universities - hoping that they will notice and invite you onboard ??

I had this opportunity a few times. It is sometimes easier for the host University to accommodate you because of your skills. But the one and the most important one is the need for you in that institution. I agree with all people who commented; every advice is valuable but good CV or Good achievement etc.. are not enough for some institutions. Some will accept you based on your field of study (this is very important) and some will be willing to accept you based on your willingness to carry out study in a certain subject. I dont think there is a strict criteria. Field of study and the need for it are two important requirement in my view.

I will recommend 4 major pointers! 1. Develop a strong knowledge in the topic of your choice and where you are working currently. 2. Share your knowledge with the target audience, that is the Institutes and their professors/ students. That's how they know about your expertise in the subject. 3. Participate in the Seminars/ Conferences and develop network with the people from various backgrounds (industry practitioners, professors, students etc.). 4. Leverage Social Media platforms and actively engage in sharing your expertise with people in the virtual environment.

If you're trying for a country which is primarily non-English speaking, provide a local language translation (Google translate can help) of your email and politely add that the translation is not optimum due to your lack of local language. Although I am not trying to be a visiting professor, I want to teach somewhere as a visiting lecturer after getting an MA in the Classics. With MAs in Classics, Applied Linguistics, and Education, a BA in Linguistics, a Ph.D. in Dental Science, and a license in acupuncture, I am sure I can teach something interesting in healthcare communication.
