Best way to get started is to shoot videos for friends for free...write a simple treatment or script. rent a cheap camera for a weekend (rates are better) then edit them yourself and learn how to put it all together. Hint: Bands usually love free music videos!

How to become a photographer you ask? You take photos. That’s it. There’s nothing else to it. You take as many photos as you can in as many ways and places as your budget, imagination, and health allow. The first 10,000 photos you take will be awful, so it’s best to start snapping sooner vs later! Also, the best camera is the camera you have on your person. iPhones are phenomenal tech that you can master framing and composition with. They produce competitive images that can be used professionally. Start with the iPhone and once it can’t do what you need, figure out a camera that does do what you need. And never look back.

I find it useful to getting hands on experience. Ask lots of questions even if you think you know the answer to (YouTube has been a great teacher from my experience). Get your phone out, start small, limit yourself from buying equipment until you understand the difficulty of what you want on screen. Once you've understand what you've been working on, understand the roles and positions of filmmaking. Get as much info as you can, get lots of hands on experience and learn lots. You don't have to start with big equipment. But you can build up on it much later.

Start small and do projects that please you and people close to you. Interact with others and share ideas. Don't be afraid to try new things out of your comfort zone.

I went to college, majored in media communications and got into broadcast journalism, TV production through the college. Once you’ve understood some of the knowledge of what some technical terms and tools are. Get started! Don't waste time. Don't need a script or anything. Start with interviews, music videos. Get your camera out (phone works just as fine) and start filming. The best way to getting to know what you want is in the editing room. Get to know the process of it all. But you need to start filming. Go to the park, get a friend and just film and add music in the editing stage. You don't need a whole tone to get started. But it's up to you to actually get going!

Take out your cell phone and start shooting stills and video. Trye different settings to see the results. Some might surprise you. Get an action camera and try different ways of using it. Watch how to videos on YouTube or other channels. Be your person and let your videos show your personality no matter the subject. Use your point of view.

Online courses are an amazing resource. Youtubers such as The Wandering DP (Patrick O'Sullivan) and Brandon Li are free and excellent, and paid courses such as filmmaker academy are excellent places to learn from established pros.

I started charging clients with a $400 Canon Rebel. I shot a promo video for Snoop Doggy Dog with that same entry level camera. Learning how light works is more important than having a $10,000 cinema camera. Id take someone with a $2000 Mirrorless camera and a solid foundation and understanding of light over a noob with a RED. It comes with time. Build as you grow. But... I have never regretted investing in equipment as my business has grown. Each new element and upgrade to a particular department allows me to create 'better' content. And as my equipment and skillset has increased, so has my value as a creator and therefore what I can charge. The more you know, the more you grow, the more value you provide, the more you are worth.

Invest in equipment when you feel like you're ready. Start with a small camera and good sound equipment. A video may look bad, but the sound quality must be great. Without good sound, you will loose interest with your audience. Look into editing softwares, and learn to use editing for your story telling, once again, video may look bad, but the magic goes in the editing room, looking into editing softwares will help expand your story telling creativity and get you further into what you're actually looking for. If you don't know about editing, ask YouTube, there's so many tutorials and great youtubers who are a great tool to expand your knowledge within the film industry.

Start with making yourself a reel of the things you've made. It's the best way to show someone what you've accomplished and will be a solid way to show your commitment and work to others. Get yourself out there with social media. Make yourself a business account and get going, post your reels, your work. Promote yourself. Make several reels depending on who you want your audience to be. Edit your reels according to what you want to show someone who'd you think you want to get hired by. Make it short and sweet. No one wants to sit through 5min or longer watching a reel. So keep it about 2min max. Get the message across. Keep it entertaining.

Your portfolio should reflect what you are most passionate about, not what you shoot the most of. Sometimes your portfolio can hinder your client growth, or put you in a rut. It’s critical you keep pushing your craft and keep updating your portfolio. The bigger you get, that becomes your competitive advantage.

Working as an assistant to better/more experienced videographers can be a great way to get your foot in the door. Over time, the client may offer them a job they don't have time for - and they'll recommend you instead. Other times, they may outgrow that client as their jobs increase in size, and then recommend you instead.

I have doubled my revenue with my company 2 years in a row. Building your network is equally, if not MORE important than marketing. (though it is true you need to do both) But as a small business owner, my 'marketing' efforts haven't drastically changed over the past 3 years. I used to think - One day you would cross a finish line and know enough to be good for the rest of your life. That once you knew enough, you could stop learning and just execute. That is naive. I have since learned, the more you learn the better you get. And who wants to stop getting better. Read. Everyday. You will never go wrong investing in yourself/advancing your skillset/building your knowledge and foundation. Go and do great things.
