How do you become a songwriter?

Your first step is to learn popular song structures. These structures work with all genres that sell today. Even when you can't find inspiration, you can use these structures as your starting point. Keep in mind that you need to know these structures first. Else, your songs won't be considered for recording. Does this restrict your creativity? No! It frees you up. Song structures are like the grammar of songwriting. When you write regular sentences, there is a structure you follow. It's the same thing but it's for songwriting.

Songwriting is like poetry, and it's a gift. It's freedom and creativity through rhythm and the poetry of sounds. You'll find your inspiration to be what moves you - your heart and soul, that is. Good songwriting always comes from deep within, and touches other people; evokes emotion. It's relatable. You'll know your inspiration when you feel it.

I write my own songs. Initially I did so with the help of my own very basic guitar playing skills which helped me find the melody. These days it often comes from a lyric or line of the vocal that inspires me. I think the main thing is to play and, like with all creative things, to have a go and unhook your ‘must produce something great’ from your ability to express yourself and have a go.

To become a professional songwriter you need to train your ears and write songs. The two goes hand-in-hand. Get good recordings, enhance your skillset and find people to collaborate with. Then you can share your songs, learn how to handle rejection and find the people who can help you.

As a songwriter, just do it. Start writing! Figure out why your writing. Is it because you have something in you that needs to get out? Is it because you want to get in the music industry as a writer? I think knowing who you are as a writer lays the foundation to began and drive your pathway forward. The next thing is networking. Build your network before you need one. Figure out your niche and dig in. The inspiration will come.

Do your best to write everyday. You will need a catalogue of songs to be taken seriously. So while you don't have to write a new song everyday, you need to write something. Over time, you'll have a catalogue of good songs, ready to be recorded.

As a poet, I would say tell stories and embrace your poetic voice. Songwriting often involves storytelling and poetic skills to craft compelling narratives in your songs. Find your unique style, embrace your inner voice but adapt to the musical context. If you are just starting out, you might want to venture into various music genres for inspiration, study the craft of song lyrics, experiment with melodies that complement your words and consider collaborating with musicians to enhance your compositions. Attend songwriting workshops would also be useful. But above all, I would say maintain authenticity in your storytelling.

Study music. Study poetry. Study the industry. Then practice, practice and practice! Write different lyrics to songs that you like. Try changing the pacing of the words without ruining its melody or its rhythm. If you speak another language, try translating songs from one language to another. Remember that in music, most of the times, what you’re saying is not as important as how it sounds.

All you need is a pen ?? and a blank paper ??......pick up a pen and pour down all your emotions . Read the scenes in which song is required, put yourself in that situation and think how it feels and then start writing. Be it happy , romantic or sad song write which comes straight directly from the heart. Being original and pure emotions , it appeals and it works.

Your style will emerge over time. Don't make the mistake of worrying about style when you're starting out. When you begin, you should focus on understanding the principles that make songs work. As you practice the basics, your style will start showing naturally. In fact, trying to create a style may cause you to sound fake. Allow your style to build up and grow. That's when your unique way of writing will naturally come out. When you have more experience, you will simply tweak your style.

I came from a storyteller/poet background, not a musician, but i do love music. So when the opportunity came for me to be a songwriter, i already have a style. BUT, if you already have a distinct style, it's not always a good thing. For example, i need to tone my language down so the lyrics doesn't become 'mouthful'. If you don't have a style, i suggest you wrote some poet first, listen to the songs you liked over the years, and found a thread of correlation between them.

Stevie Wonder said once that if you write 400 songs you might find a good one...so let′s practice writing 28 hours a day! Record every idea and revisit them from time to time.

Do you prefer to work on lyrics? Or do you prefer to work on melodies? Or do you like both? Find people who complement what you are good at. That's a good way to strengthen your skills. But, you have to be aware of a couple of traps. Make sure you have agreements in place. You must know how you'll go about splitting royalties. And be clear on who owns the various rights to the songs. Else the collaboration can turn into a painful experience.

Don't just publish, promote! Once your tune's crafted, treat it like a launchpad. Blast it off on every platform: open mics, streaming services, even local podcasts. Network with coffee-shop owners for live gigs. Reach out to artists seeking original material – think beyond genre, your melody might surprise a rapper! Register your songs with ASCAP or BMI - think copyright shield, not creativity handcuffs. Remember, every play, every deal, every fan is a rung on your musical ladder. Climb high, songsmith!

Songwriting is a difficult skill but you can become good if you put in the work. But it's not just about the songs. There is a business side to it. You have to master it too. To become a songwriter, you must know how to sell yourself. Network with all kinds of people in the entertainment industries. Have fun and put in the work!

To be a songwriter, one needs to have some musical talent. You don't have to be a Mike Shinoda, but you should have some basic skills. Moreover, you have to be creative and find inspiration from any source you can find. And learn poetry, After all songs are nothing but poems, right?

If you're a lyricist, consider songs from so many years ago that they're out of copyright protection. As you listen to the tune, let words of your own come to you. Write those down without censoring yourself. Later, go back with an ear for emphasis. For instance, the words stressed by the music need to be worth emphasizing. If not, keep playing with words until you have a good match of thoughts and tune.

For me to become a songwriter, I will start by studying songwriting techniques, listen to diverse music, and write regularly to develop my style. I will collaborate with others, seek feedback, and performing my songs for exposure. I would network with industry professionals and persist in refining my skills. I will intentionally consider formal education in music theory or songwriting to deepen my knowledge. With dedication and practice, I can pursue a career as a songwriter in the music industry.
