How do you become a senior oracle database administrator?

Having a technical degree may not be a sufficient criteria. I saw many DBAs still struggles. But having a clear understanding of Oracle Architecture plays an important role to become a pro DBA. Once foundatoin is concrete then you are on driving seat. Then being a senior DBA, contineous upskilling in the areas of scripting , RAC, HA&DR and Peformance tuning will be good. Most important you need to play a role of a mentor so that you can share your practical exposure with the DBAs and try to mitigate the skill gap within a team. Off course certification gives recognisation for your skills that you nurture thoughout your career and many industries recognise these credentials.

To become a Senior Oracle Database Administrator, obtain a relevant degree, gain hands-on experience in Oracle databases, specialize and acquire certifications, develop problem-solving skills, stay updated on Oracle technologies, build leadership and communication skills, work on large projects, network within the industry, and showcase achievements in optimizing performance and project success.

In order to become a Senior Oracle Database Administrator, you must be conversant with SQL queries, understand the Oracle database architecture, as well as general database technologies. Additionally, you should have a good grasp of Linux, Unix, and Windows operating systems, and possess critical analytical skills to help you solve problems.

To become a senior Oracle Database Administrator (DBA): Obtain a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent. Gain foundational DBA skills and practical experience. It depends on +how+ you get your OCA or OCP certification. Here's how +not+ to do that: Get a bunch of "brain dumps" so you can pass the certification tests. The best way to get certification is to actually take some training classes directly from Oracle. They're not necessarily that cheap, but by the end of a one-week class, you'll be a better DBA for that.

As usual, practical exposure in any technology plays a vital role. Theory clears your concept but practial industry exposure makes these concepts constructive. Every company looks for an automation to avoid manual errors resulting in downtime or performance degradation. So having scirpting skill in DBA is an added advantage. No matter whichever is the RDBMS automation now a days is must. So DBA, at least have some moderate level of scripting expertise which can be utilised in working on automation.

My opinion, always set aside 1 to 2 hours in your day to dedicate yourself to studying database topics and create your practical laboratories and test all types of possible scenarios, this will give you consistency and confidence.

To have an upper edge in this competitive market and environment ,having practical knowledge is a must . Merely reading about a technology or a product will not be sufficient , specially in cases when you are a part of a product team or providing support for the product/ technology .For Oracle DBA field having familiarity to the important areas is vital like oracle DB architecture , datapump, RAC , dataguard etc . The DBA space is evolving every day with lot of automation and new tech stack coming . The tasks that a DBA used to do 5 years back are all automated like backups ,patching , monitoring etc. Having practical knowledge of each area is important and best way is to learn on the job .

Here's what I did for the first 2 years of being an in-the-trenches Oracle DBA: I actually read all the documentation on anything remotely connected with what I was doing every day. I started with Oracle Database Concepts and worked my way through all the key manuals - Performance Tuning, PL/SQL Packages and Types, PL/SQL Language, and of course SQL Tuning. By the end, I had a really good idea on +why+ the database worked the way it did.

Every DBA needs to upskill themselves frequently. As DB features are keep on changing at regular intervals and DBA to adapt these changes to understand whats new or what has been changed since last version. Once Sr. DBA knows these changes, he can work upon on how to utilised these new features or changes in current enviornment to enhance the database performance. Customer is more keen to move their databases into the cloud to overcome on their ongoing capex. And being a Sr. DBA you just cant have the knowledge of on-premises but having cloud skills including migration expertise gives you an edge over other DBAs to assess the customer enviornment and let them know what would be the benifits if database gets migrate to the cloud.

As I said earlier, we must be constantly updating and seeing waves of changes such as AI, ML, among others. That's why it's important to dedicate time in your day to at least read about new topics or update yourself in your areas of expertise.

You only need PLSQL as a DBA, if you work in a team with developers. If you work close to the system, Batch, Shell, and OS tools are much more important.

Did the same when all the Oracle books fit on one shelf in the O7 days. Not sure how large it would be today but am guessing it would take the whole bookcase and more.

Most geographies have at least one Oracle User Group nearby - or it may be just a bunch of DevOps and Data Engineers meeting for coffee / beverages once every few months. Find the group, get plugged in, and meet your cohort. You may even find your next opportunity through that network.

Depending on the Job, the soft skills you need will be very different. Check out your weaknesses and work on them, connect with your peer group.

Believe it or not ... many Oracle publications are +dying+ for well-written content. Consider writing short articles, blog posts, or even recording short videos on whatever you find interesting about your job. You can usually find a mentor through your network (see #4 previously) that will help you write better content. Oh, and make sure you test ALL your code before you publish, not just do "the Google, the cut, and the paste" from some example in the documentation or someone else's article. Nothing will detract from your reputation from ill-written or non-executable code!
