How do you become a project controller?

Project control involves monitoring, regulating, and adjusting project activities to ensure they align with the established plans. It includes tracking progress, managing resources, and addressing deviations for successful project completion.

Project Controls is to give an independent view of the Project to the Management by understanding the processes of the Project with the relevant domain knowledge and more importantly adding value to the Team / Stakeholders by knowing where their shoe pinches and suitably contribute to the Project in Planning & Scheduling, Cost control., Contracts., Estimation and knowledge management. These five gamuts form an integral part of Project Controls.

Fundamentally project controls covers up to 60-70% of project management on most projects, and that has to manage scope, cost and schedule through all stages of project from baselining to close out. Scope, Cost and Schedule are three main aspects of any project no matter what it is. hence the role of project controller is critical to the success of project and the team.

Actually, I disagree with the notion that project control is just about micromanaging. It’s more about guiding the project like a skilled captain navigating a ship through turbulent waters, ensuring it stays on course. An example I have seen is when a construction project I managed faced unexpected delays. By continuously tracking progress and adjusting plans, we not only met the deadline but also stayed within budget.

Cost and time to complete the project is the important role of the controller. CPM is the essential part of execution and monitoring the progress of every project. Cost control as well as the quality production to be ensured.

Day-to-day responsibilities of a project controller include: 1. Budget management - including billing, spend forecasts, earned value management 2. Schedule management - tracking and monitoring deliverables, identifying delays and schedule slippage and developing mitigation measures 3. Resource management - to support project delivery on schedule and within budget

Before enter the Project need to understand project requirement, 2. based on the Project requirement need to build the team and skill set, 3. continuously monitor and control the Team skill improvement, 4. Once team ready need to prepare the Project documentation, for the development and maintenance, 5. if the all subject we have 100 % confident , we close the project on time, that should be project controller need to understand, For other responsibilities : budgets and Forecast, team stability , project going on as per the schedule ,

Project controller must be familiar with all required applicable governance and assurance reviews to ensure completeness of scope going into project stage-gate approvals.

1- read contract, study scope, prepare plans, prepare monitoring / tracking sheets, coordinate with team / client / subcontractors. 2- receive data / information, review, analyze, update, review again, discuss, analyze the impact, discuss again, prepare reports, submit. 3- monitor and control scope, time, cost, risk, resources, critical / near critical paths. 4- recommend solutions, suggest alternatives, propose changes. 5- keep records of logs, changes, risk, impact 6- Client satisfaction and subcontractor control.

Continuous learning is key for project controllers. Stay updated on project management trends, tools, and techniques. Seek certifications, attend training, and network with peers for ongoing growth. Prioritize learning to excel in diverse project?scenarios.

Other than the skills and competencies listed above, project controller should have a good working relationship with the project manager so they can provide information good or bad.

Enhance your expertise in budgeting, scheduling and risk management through specialized training. Develop proficiency in project management software tools commonly used in the industry. En general un controlar de proyeco requiere: -Tener dominio de los principios PMI, especialmente los asociados al Monitoreo y control, así como el del cálculo de los indicadores del proyecto. -Tener dominio en el uso de software, dependiendo de la industria en la que se desenvuelva, como pueden ser Primavera P6, Microsoft Project y Excel. -Poseer habilidades blandas para mantener buenas relaciones y coordaciones con el equipo y cliente.

Si bien existen cursos específicos asociados a control de proyecto, estos no son requerimientos para trabajar en el área, aunque muchas veces los clientes tienen exigecias de certificaciones para el Controlador de proyectos, estas suelen ser: -Carrera afín, usualmente Ingenieria civil Ingenieria industrial o Ingeniería en Construcción. -Certificación en uso de software como Primavera P6. -Certificación PMP del PMI (según a?os de experiencia requeridos)

One can start project control function by joining as junior project controller by doing basic certifications in project management like APMp. Creo que la Gerencia de Gestión de Proyectos es un departamento compuesto por profesionales de vasta experiencia en proyectos; que involucra analizar, diagnosticar, establecer un plan frente a problemáticas en el “ciclo de vida de un proyecto” donde ese problema o problemáticas identificadas se solucionan mediante una metodología propuesta y se transforman en una “Oportunidad de Mejora” para el proyecto y los profesionales que participan de la gestión de él.
