Balancing these key components of design within one’s workflow is essential to success & it can be as easy as making a “vision board”. . Simply imagine a product in all of its aesthetic splendor, evaluate the purpose of its application, & select materials which acquiesce to the sensitivities & desires of the end user & their environment. . Establish a consistent practice, compile a portfolio, continuously learn, & create, create, create! One will inevitably develop a marketable proficiency regardless of academic achievement. . I personally, am self-taught with an established design business created from lifelong experience & if I can do it, so can anyone.
I concur with the suggestions expressed by colleagues in this blog. You will need a good understanding of the industry you choose to design for, and a good math and technical background. You need to develop a passion for it. Also, a mentor will help you navigate those waters a bit easier. Need to learn very well the CAD system your industry is most inclined to: Solidworks, Catia, any of the Autodesk suite, BIM, etc. One additional suggestion I have for a young designer is to visit the production floor as many times as you can, to learn the production process. That will give you an insight and perspective that many designers lack. Always challenge manufacturing, but design for manufacturability. The success of the product depends on it.
