Yes it's wise to know which direction you want to take, but first learn to be flexible and how to adapt in different environments. That way you'll know which style of media resonates more with you and the type of career you're trying to build & you'll be able to choose your niche.

In production, the more skills you can bring to the table, the better. I believe that the best if not the only way to do this, is by starting from ground up. Even if you want to be a director and that's your ideal role, that won't happen overnight. Start by being a gaffer, learn how the camera works, know how to set up the sound, the lights etc. This will make you a really capable crew member, no matter what role you end up sticking to. You'll at least be able to understand how everything works.

As a crew member, I wouldn't really worry too much about the filming equipment itself, although it's never a bad idea to own a few stuff, but invest more in tools. There's nothing that'll make you look and be more competent on set than having the right tool. There's always gonna be something that needs to be screwed in, tied up, glued etc. When you have utility tools, you're a powerhouse.
