How do you become a legal advisor?

Becoming a legal advisor isn’t just about getting a law degree and passing the bar—that’s just step one. The real journey is in finding your niche, mastering your area of law, and constantly staying ahead of the game. But more than anything, it’s about building trust and strong relationships through real experience and thoughtful advice. That’s what truly sets you apart in this field.

My advice: *before the law degree, it would benefit you to do work experience/job shadowing/interning - know what you are getting yourself into; *Spend time in a law firm, CPS or legal department of a corporate to understand whether the "profession" (in house or in a law firm) is really for you; *Speak to as many lawyers as possible across practice areas and obtain an honest assessment of what they do and don't like about their day to day. *If you then have an inkling of whether a certain area of law is for you (criminal, corporate, IP, litigation etc...) then pull the trigger and get that law degree!

Yep. Pass the bar in the jurisdiction where you desire to practice law. But you also must pass the character and fitness background check of that jurisdiction. Before applying to law school, you should thoroughly review those requirements. If you can’t pass the character and fitness questions, you will not practice law even if you earn a 4.0 in law school and make the hight score on the bar exam.

Actively participate in the drafting process. Be intensely involved in hearing preparations. Shadow experienced litigators to learn firsthand. Attend seminars, network with litigators through legal associations, and seek mentorship from seasoned professionals for insights and guidance.

Like many other professions, becoming a good lawyer or legal adviser requires gaining experience. One can always focus on a niche field. However, in my opinion, a lawyer should experience the basics in various fields, especially in the early stages of their career. This provides multidisciplinary thinking abilities and an understanding of cross-functional aspects of law. This also helps them understand in which areas they want to specialize.

For litigation lawyers, get as much experience as you can in front of a judge, adjudicator, decision-maker. You need to develop the skills to be able to litigate your files and it is only by understanding the end result you are working for, that you can advise your client properly. Spend the time to develop the skills you need, not just in assessment of cases, but argument of cases as well. That is how you understand where and when your evidence fits in and you get a sense of how they will be accepted. You develop your presentation skills and how you communicate your position as well and how to adapt them on the fly. Watching other lawyers is good but skills are formed by doing and this increases your client's credibility and trust.

Experience is crucial for a successful legal advisor. Practical exposure through internships, court experience, staying updated on case law, reading relevant books, attending seminars, and following legal news sharpens your skills and enhances your advocacy. It’s important to gain as much experience as possible, from as early as possible. It sounds simple, but it’s crucial. You can always specialise in a particular area and find your nice later on down the journey but particularly in the earlier years, as much experience in a variety of different areas will be essential to help you understand the roles and complexities of each area of work. The different skills and attributes that are required and which areas may align more with you in a personal level ( equally which may not)

For new professionals, increasing competency is key. While expertise is essential, acknowledging gaps in knowledge and showing willingness to learn can also build trust. If you're new, shadow experienced associates to learn. Being honest with clients about seeking answers when you don't have them can be a powerful way to build both trust and competency. This approach not only enhances your expertise but also demonstrates your commitment to providing the best service and advice in your chosen niche .

The AI answer seems biased toward returning to law school to overpay for more formal education on law. For most practitioners, the best advanced education will come from practicing law for paying clients. It also comes from attending continuing legal education conferences and short workshops. It also comes from finding and working with attorney and non-attorney mentors or coaches who are at the level you desire to reach.

Specialized certifications often involve practical case studies, workshops, and interactions with experts in the field, helping you stay updated with the latest legal trends and developments. This continued learning demonstrates your commitment to your profession and equips you with the tools to address emerging legal challenges effectively. By investing in specialized education, you position yourself as a knowledgeable and trusted legal advisor capable of delivering high-quality advice tailored to your clients' specific needs.

Don't stop learning. It is a lifetime prerequisite for this profession. My advice would be - try to study finance, accounting , entrepreneurship, operational and project management at some point. This will help you to understand your clients better, to find hidden gems for court cases in documentation that lawyers are not often familiar with. You'll get a real competitive advantage.

There is something to learn every day. The legal community, like many others, is rapidly evolving with the addition of technology. The need to learn the pros and cons of advancements in any profession is crucial.

I believe that no one can be an expert in everything. You need to find what you are good at and enjoy doing. Find your niche before you start promoting yourself as a legal adviser to the world.

Its an interesting thing, the best lawyers I have come across have great expertise in their niche but still have the ability to adapt and embrace new legal concepts from different areas of law. They can adapt legal concepts from anywhere to their own area of knowledge. This is how the law grows and evolves over time and what makes it so interesting. Gain your expertise and find your passion but keep yourself open and agile to the ebbs and flows of broader legal thought around you too. It will help you anticipate change and be comfortable with it when it comes.

We always Need to find our specificity, and always accept not to be a specialist in all areas and not to be shy to answer ??I do not know about it, not my specialty… but I know a very good lawyer spezialise in it??.

A niche is equivalent to a passion. Your passion will fulfull your personal advisory mission while being an advocate for others.

Uno debe conocer todos los principios del derecho, pero especializarse en por lo menos dos campos relacionados. Así se crea base y fundamento y no solo espuma!

You need to build yourself a brand both internally and externally. The first step is to do your job and do it well. This ensures that your competence is never in doubt. Secondly, be collegiate or a good colleague - remember that people don't remember what you said, instead they remember how you made them feel. Third - earn the trust and respect of people you work with no matter the level of seniority. Treat everyone you work with equally irrespective of title or job description. Lastly, build meaningful relationships and maintain relationships even after you have moved on from a job or company. Having an extensive network can sometimes be a powerful tool.

Choose a niche and excel at it. It means writing on the topic, speaking at conferences, leading forums, writing books and articles, podcasts, serving on boards and a lot more.

As a litigation lawyer, push yourself out of your comfort zone. Once you have developed your skills, seek out new areas to practice in. Don’t be scared of the weird and wonderful as these are the most interesting files. Administrative law in tribunals can also provide new challenges or ways to gain more experience. Written advocacy is one area that tends to be under appreciated so seek out complex motions or applications that will get you writing. Continually seek criticism and feedback to further refine your skills. Most importantly, pass on what you have learned. Your reputation will really start grow when you pay it forward and start developing the next generation of litigators.

Expand your view in all networking venues. Listen to all views on topics, even those you disagree with. Keeping an open mind is necessary.

Professional responsibility, personal integrity and an ethical approach are non-negotiable for a lawyer. You will be expected to meet the highest of ethical and moral standards and this will form the bedrock of your relationship with clients. ? Really step into the shoes of your client. What is bothering them the most? What is most at risk? What's the BEST way forward for your client (Not necessarily legally....)? If there is another party - is there a way forward for both of them? Talk them through these points before you utter a word of advice. Question. Listen. Advise. Think broadly and always act in the best interests of your client.

Whether it’s litigation or contracts or process changes, as you advise, the client should be front of mind. It honestly makes it simpler and will make you a better partner and resource.
