They continually collaborate with senior management and use current and historical data, and trends, to monitor and manage performance against the plan. The head of planning ensures a company is on track to achieve its qualitative and quantitative goals and has sufficient human and capital resources and liquidity to pay its employees and suppliers. They must be on top of what’s going on throughout the business and adjust and communicate changes needed on a timely basis. The head of planning must understand the customers, market, suppliers, competitors, regulatory environment and anything that impacts the business operations to plan accurately.

To be an effective head of planning, most importantly, you must be comfortable with living in the FUTURE—always projecting and estimating the future. You must be a solid COLLABORATOR as accurate planning requires ongoing and frequent dialogue and trust with all areas of the business. Strong COMMUNICATION skills are a must as you need to keep everyone rowing in the right direction, aligned on strategy and not just doing whatever they want. Exceptional ANALYTICAL skills are a must as you need to consume a lot of data from many areas, often at a rapid pace, and understand and estimate how such data impacts the business going FORWARD. You must be RESILIENT as many things are not easily predictable and surprises often occur!
