How do you become a geophysical specialist?

In my view, geophysical specialist should do all QA and QC in all stage of geophysics phase starting from survey plan, data acquisition, data processing, up to data modelling in order to obtain robust geophysical model. This robust geophysical model will help other geoscientists to understand how the resource (oil & gas, mineral, geothermal) play works.

A geophysical specialists collate data of geophysical survey(seismic, gravity, electrical, etc.), analyse and Interprete the data.

In the reality i am a Geologist but the Geophysics is the branch which i like it; and it comes in the second priority to me; i did some tasks that its belong to the geophysicists duties in the processing. anyway the Geophysicist are doing all the duties which are related to physical preterites starting from the preliminary survey for all acoustic data; the Geophysicists are collecting all data which it depends on the sound velocity like magnetic, gravity and seismic survey. and they can prepare the location to magnetic or seismic survey and some of them supervisioned the data acquisition in the field, and following the data processing. finally they can do models and maps to help us in the imagine the subsurface structure

The role of a Geophysicst is to conduct different Geophysical Methods for Understanding the Earth Sub Surface,also for the Exploration/Prospecting of Minerals ,Oil&Gas etc...This includes the estimation of the sub surface Rock physical properties.The main branches of Geophysics are... Seismology, Magnetic,Gravity, Electrical, Radioactive, Geothermal, Borehole Geophysics,Tectonophysics and Near Surface Geophysics etc.Each branch will produce one Geophysical specialist in the specific area.

As a geophysicist, it is important to understand the sense of geology such as structures, depositional environment, petroleum/geothermal/ore deposition system. So that the interpretation of Geophysical data will make more sense if one geophysical specialist understands the geological features/objects being investigated. Programming skills such as python or Matlab need to be honed to facilitate data processing (but don't forget Excell). In addition, it is necessary to have an entrepreneurial spirit so that geophysical methods can be offered as a solution in reducing uncertainty and risks related to the subsurface, and these geophysical methods shall be carried out at an affordable cost with many benefits.

A graduate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is a Basic qualification for a successful Geophysicst.Knowing the subjects like Geology , statistics and Computer Science will be an added advantage.

I think for geophysical specialist you need to have strong understanding of geophysical concept and how to implement it in the resource (oil & gas, mineral, geothermal). You might want to have computer programming & coding background, and also a lil bit more understanding about geology and geochemistry to get sense of understanding of how the resource work and tweak the data/process/model as needed.

At the basic level, a geophysicist should understand the physics behind the geophysical technique and its usefulness he/she is engaged with. Depending on what area of speciality the geophysicist is focused on (see my thoughts in part 1 above), the geophysicist will need to have skillsets in one or more of the following areas: 1. Really all geological and geophysical studies are very interesting and need high capable people; the geophysical should be aware with different sciences, chemical and physics branches, recently most of revealed jobs need geo-scientist whom have a good knowledge and experience in the geology and geophysics together. the geophysicist need good mentality and imagination. the seismic, gravity and magnetic problems are huge and need special treatment to be handy. in the geophysics branch it is better to get special certificate higher than Bachelors, to be distinguish, also the association of petroleum and exploration are admitted to give a certain and specific certificate.

This is the important thing; how can be distinguished in this branch, "geophysical specialist". when you is qualified you can do great job, you will be able to give the people more or less good imagine about the subsurface form and all related structure geology. also you can contribute with different people and different experts to do different things and different models to prevent and protect the earth shape, you are also required to travel to different places to explain and interprate the different geological phenomena. you need to know the oil marketing witness high competitions and challenges, you should be able to realize that and have a good experience to solve all theses problems and stand on the stable ground.

Given the vast sub-disciplines engaged with geophysics, it takes many years for people to get a good understanding of the whole package. Of course people can always select a specific area, ie theory, practice, or field work and spend their careers focused on that specific area. To be titled a geophysical advisor requires a tremendous amont of effort and a dear passion for geophysics that is beyond learning only the science/engineering! It is kind of like a form of art. The benefit of being a geophysicist is that if you are a person who enjoys working on challenging technical work, there is always new concepts to learn from. This itself becomes a challenge for those whom are not willing to put in the effort to master the concepts!

A complicated question. Geophysics is a broad domain from field work, computational work, designing systems to broad scale exploration. The are also potential fields and siesmic, however, to become a specialist in anything, you have to get down and dirty with the fundamentals. From my experience in airborne magnetics and Radiometrics, you have to be fully integrated in any project that you’re involved in. In the airborne space, to really be a specialist you have to (well not have to) but you should allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes. Communication is vital, understand the dynamics of aviation and the principles of fieldwork. You have to ask questions, do monotonous tasks until it becomes second nature & challenge the status quo.
