How do you become a chief of surgery?

A chief of surgery has a lot of responsibility and must distinguish themselves with publishing, training, and mentoring. Surgery Chiefs also have to dedicate long hours to their patients both inside and outside the operating room.

I certainly agree with all of these steps. Ideally, the person who eventually wants to become a chief of surgery should also work on developing leadership skills. The person who expires to become a surgical chief of department will likely have some teaching responsibilities in many circumstances, and therefore a strong academic background is often highly valued. This may include formal education of surgical residence and fellows, but even if it is a non-academic community-based program, there will always be opportunities for teaching and leadership. This is something one should develop in the early part of their career.

Start with a medical degree and gain surgical experience through residency programs. Progress into leadership roles, demonstrating surgical expertise and effective team management. Acquire administrative skills crucial for overseeing surgical departments and patient care.

To ascend to the role of Chief of Surgery, the initial step involves the completion of comprehensive medical education and training. Acquiring a bachelor's degree, followed by a medical degree and a surgical residency in the chosen specialty, sets the foundation. Depending on the field, additional steps such as a fellowship or specific certifications may be necessary. Continual pursuit of education and involvement in research becomes pivotal to staying abreast of the latest surgical advancements and innovations.

Building a path towards becoming a Chief of Surgery involves accumulating experience and establishing a reputation as a skilled surgeon. Spending several years in a hospital or surgical center, handling diverse cases, and showcasing competence, professionalism, and ethical practice are essential. Often times chief of surgery is an elected position, not simply a hired one, and therefore, I agree that personal relationships with staff members at all levels are extremely important. In a formal hired and paid position certainly numerous interviews will be conducted, including and requiring numerous references from previous places of employment and training centers.

In the competitive contemporary environment that we live in, I think that formal training in leadership and management would be a highly desirable skill. Perhaps a healthcare administration, masters, degree, or a traditional MBA would be a highly sought after asset in the application process for an aspiring chief of surgery today.

Chief of surgery position, in its idealized circumstances, certainly taking one’s career to the next level. There are added levels of stress, responsibility, and accountability. Not every great surgeon needs to become a chief of surgery obviously and therefore, it’s a decision that needs to be taken seriously as it will be time-consuming and demanding on top of ones typical and customary professional responsibilities as a practicing clinical surgeon.

I think the surgical chiefs I’ve known have been great men and women. They are certainly career oriented individuals who carry the highest professional, ethical and clinical standards. I think that, for the right person this is a lofty ideal and well worth the pursuit as it adds a great deal of richness to ones Professional and personal life, and certainly has a tremendous impact on the lives of many others and the community at large.
