How do you become a change management specialist?

Should you want to become a change management specialist, you need to love people interaction, servicing of needs, active listening to fully understand the circumstances and build empathy, emotional intelligence to be able to process the soft information going around, collaborative skills and experience and negotiation skills. One of the quite useful attributes is to be humble and have a multicultural adoption and understanding background.

You should understand why the change is needed and be prepared to engage and show empathy and also be resolute. Then as many times as you succeed you may fail. That’s ok, as long as you remain humble and reflect and develop your ability to lead. It’s all about people and bringing them on a journey, but you can’t please everybody and that’s ok too.

The absolute most important thing is to accept when change isn’t needed! If you cannot do this, then you are nothing but a “change for the sake of change” agent!

In any change management I think some of the important things are 1. Clear and transparent communication 2 be empathetic about people as people are worried about unknown so help them embrace change rather than resist it . 3. take people on board and expediate it to have effective execution .

One of the other Key skills is understanding the necessity of change and change management specialist should be aware of peers who will be affected by the change and involve them in a CAB meeting and have their approvals before taking action for other Steps. Sometimes the change is not business priority at that time.

Working with experts always helps and it is a non disputed benefit. The issue here is to be lucky enough to work with good experts that not only know the work but also are willing to share.

Develop mental muscle to identify opportunities within your remit and think the situation as a CM practitioner the more you train yourself that way the stronger the concepts and knowledge becomes. Another way to bolster the knowledge is to regularly teach the concepts and frameworks amongst your network. Explore opportunities to collaborate with like minded individuals and carry out change projects within your company, community or volunteer for a not for profit.

Focus on gaining years of hands-on, practiced experience. You can start at analyst level, or volunteer as a change champion within your current role, to show your passion and gain exposure, that can land you future roles (whilst still getting experience). Join and contribute to networks, community and specialist groups on LinkedIn, virtually and in person - you’ll gain valuable, varied perspectives. Your goals would be ideally to gain exposure, over time to multiple industries, different styles of change and transformations, and with different ways of working and across various cultures. Like ‘Emotion trumps reason’ Im almost guilty of thinking ‘Experience trumps education’. Not quite however there’s a place for experience pre formal change education particularly in ascertaining whether it’s the profession for you. The perception of the role of Change vs the reality is often very different. I always recommend getting some experience in the space whilst exploring further learning. Where to gain that experience? Can you volunteer in a mature change organisation, shadow a friend or offer a helping hand to a Change Manager at your current company? For those who are earlier in their career considering Change, I recommend consulting- which gives you exposure across industries, scenarios and access to resources + mentors.

A key skill you need as a change manager is systems thinking. This is the ability to ‘see’ the system (and its hidden patterns), design appropriate solutions, and intervene successfully to bring about change. While this ability is critical to your success as a change manager, it is often overlooked in favour of “interpersonal skills”. A compounding issues is the fact that we have been taught to think in mechanical, linear ways - our brains are wired for technical problem solving. However it is worth persevering in your efforts to learn to think more systemically. If you want to move from ‘good’ to ‘great’ as a change manager, then start to hone your capabilities as a systems thinker.

To be a good change manager, focus on three key skills: being vision-oriented person , communicating well, and being empathetic. A clear vision helps move from the current to the desired state, good communication is essential for persuading people, and empathy allows you to understand and address resistance and motivations. Remember, we connect emotionally first, and persuasion follows.

Becoming a good change practitioner takes time. Some elements have to be taken into consideration: 1. empathy -> you are dealing with people going through a change. It is a challenging situation for them. Keep an open mind and suspend judgment. 2. strategic thinking -> change management strategy fits into the bigger picture: show how change management can support the achievement of project ROI 3. resilience: as a change practitioner, you are human. There are many obstacles to overcome (internal politics, unsupportive sponsors, resistant end users, and pressure). Take care of yourself and take time to recharge your batteries 4. it's not about you -> Change practitioners are not the stars of the show. You are the director behind the scenes

Natural Talents: There are skills that can be adopted and taught, and there are traits and behaviors that are embedded in the human’s DNA. Some people find it easy to journey through change and even enjoy it; they are hungry to do things differently and grow.. Majority though are doers (very much comfortable doing what they’re doing, and don’t care to learn, or do things differently) but are key to running operations. And even if there are factual benefits lined up for them with Change, they simply don’t want to hear it. Organizations need to understand the composition, include all, and walk them through change as they compliment each other.

It would be great if change management followed a well structured pattern of a step by step approach (assess, plan, evaluate, etc) However, my reflections on change management is that unlike programme management, change is chaotic and complex. The most important skill one can bring in an organisation that is going through change is the ability to provide clarity and communicate with empathy while leading the difficult conversations. Brace yourself to balance a positive future narrative with managing challenging relationships and be prepared for sharing bad news. A change leader is not a cheerleader in chief...and toxic positivity is a thing.
