Before the computer art was the leading tool, my work was and is all done on illustratioin board, canvas, or paper. Later I broadened to murals on glass, metal, or wood, even billboards. I could never leave a real canvas or paper in place of the computer. The more I had to show using any kind of paint or pencil, paper, or illustration board, using oils, acrylics, watercolors, or pencil, the more business I made. I learned from the beginning, if someone asked for something I've never done, I said 'yes' and went to learn it. Speed is very important.
I embarked on my creative journey as a food photographer, building a successful career in Dubai and founding my own agency in 2017. Over time, I transitioned to web and mobile app development, specializing in UI/UX design. In my experience, employers have been keen to see processes and work in progress; this could be sketchbook work, screen recordings of your work, anything that you do that showcases how you solve problems. Like anything of great quality, there will always be people who want to see behind the scenes. If you’re a designer who specialises in a few areas, it’s good to have these areas easily and readily accessible. Perhaps you have a section under your professional work page that showcases your animation skills or illustration skills, and perhaps those are the links you send to specific jobs you apply for that need to see those abilities.
When it comes to balancing a graphic portfolio, there are a few things to keep in mind. it's crucial to understand who you are as a designer and what your strengths and unique skills are. Define the scope of your skills and specialize in areas that you're passionate about and feel most competent in. Choose the pieces for your portfolio with care. They should demonstrate your ability to tackle various creative challenges. Showcase your versatility and ability to handle different projects. It should be clear and representative enough for any company or individual to see how their graphic needs could be addressed by you. Let the Work Speak for Itself, and do the talking. Feel proud of your work. Trust the process.

Updating your portfolio is something that is often times overlooked but a important factor to stay in the picture. Not only does it help with social media reach, but your growth as a person should reflect in your work as well. After all: you are also not the same person you were 5 years ago. :)

Most professional artists, graphic designers and illustrators etc, will have had criticism about their work, especially early on in their careers. You never stop learning.
Finally, remember that quality is more important than quantity when it comes to your portfolio. You don't need to include every single project that you've ever done in your portfolio. Instead, be selective and choose only the best and most relevant examples of your work that showcase your skills and style. You can also create different versions of your portfolio for different purposes, such as applying for a specific job, pitching to a specific client, or entering a specific contest.
Creating different selections of work portfolios is appropriate for the job of client to view. So know what your client is wanting and select work that best shows your skills for that project.
Selectivity in design is paramount. It's not about the quantity but the quality of work showcased. Being selective allows me to curate a portfolio that truly represents my best and most relevant pieces. It ensures that every project I present speaks volumes about my skills, creativity, and ability to meet clients' needs effectively.
Always present yourself well. I am successful only if I can see the difference between me five years ago and me now. You have to change your work style with time. Always try to do something new. It is not enough to stop, you have to keep trying, one day success will come in sha Allah.
