Research excellence is indeed a subjective concept. One thing I find helpful is using a collaborative approach to account for one's cognitive biases in analysis.

I had a more superficial view of academic excellence: I would produce a unique, impactful, and striking piece of research in a relevant area. Yes, this ambition was never dampened, but I realized that I tended to over-extend the contextual framework of the M&O research in my pursuit of research excellence. However, it's equally important that this research doesn't just sit on shelves gathering dust; it needs to be practical and impactful. That's where relevance comes in. It's about taking our findings and using them to solve actual problems, improve lives, and drive positive change. So, I see it as a harmonious blend of the two – striving for excellence in our work while ensuring it has a tangible, meaningful effect on the world around us.
