Performance and learning are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they're integrated. Most people have goals that require some form of development as part of their 'stretch'. Plus a lot of this learning happens on-the-job, by being coached day-to-day. Seeing this co-dependence as the route to achieving your goals is key. Not a balancing act but - to continue with the high wire analogy - as achieving even greater heights by developing the skills you need.

Learning activities are any actions that help you acquire new knowledge, skills, or attitudes that can improve your performance. All of the above doesn’t help all that much if people don’t feel safe. You MUST ensure they know what game they are playing, what rules they can and cannot break and that you WILL support them through failure. That faster the pace of change the easier it will be to make mistakes and the faster people need to learn - they just need to know you will be there for them when you slip on the ice - you WILL be there to give them a hand up. When I’ve done this it can be incredibly rewarding for both parties as you learn and grow together.
